Building a rig for my mate.

We have decided to keep his case, optical drives and 200GB hard drive.

We are going to gut the rest (ie his mobo/grx card/CPU etc and install this:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £298.99 (£259.99)

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £211.99 (£184.34)

Asus P6T SE Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
£144.99 (£126.08)

Corsair TX 750W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750TXUK)

£89.99 (£78.25)
Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler (Socket LGA775/1156/1366/AM2/AM3)

Will this produce a good system?
Are all the parts compatible for windows 7 64bit?
Anything that should be added/taken away/changed?

Any advice would be welcomed thank you.

Nice system, only thing to remember is the P6T SE does not support SLI, but with the 5870 he will not need to worry.

Nice system. If I had that much money to spend, i'd do something like that... Lots of places say the i5 is better for gaming though, is that mostly what the PC is for?

I would probably say then go for the i5. Cheaper, and better for gaming.

Afraid I can't recommend a good board to go with it though, as I've never really looked into building an intel system. Call me silly for being an AMD fan, but i've had one all the way from socket A, and gone through each and every socket they've made.

*edit* well, every desktop socket... I've not done any server builds with AMD.

OK how is this?

Decided it might be a good idea to upgrade to a 1TB HDD

Also as we are using his old case (which is 2 years old) will there be an issue with using the older wiring to connect the mobo or will they be ok?

Thanks for your help

Or another option. get the i5 overclocked bundle in place of the CPU/ mobo and CPU cooler so i would get this:

*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz @ 4.00GHz / Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 Intel P55 Motherboard / Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-12800C9 1600MHz DDR3 Bundle £479.99 (£417.38)

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
£298.99 (£259.99)

Corsair TX 750W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750TXUK)
£95.99 (£83.47)

Kingston HyperX 6GB (3x2GB) Intel XMP DDR3 12800C9 1600MHz Tri-Channel Kit (KHX12800D3K3/6GX)
£89.99 (£78.25)

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ)
£61.99 (£53.90)

Sub Total : £892.99
Shipping : £10.50
VAT : £135.52

If i use this one how good is the RAM in the bundle for windows 7 64 bit plus gaming? will i be able to get rid of the 6GB of kingston RAM or should i get that and use it instead and sell the corsair RAM?

It depends on what case he has?

If you go i5, the Ram is included in that bundle so you can ditch the Kingston stuff.
The kingston wouldn't work anyway considering how it is triple channel while i5 uses dual channel.

The kingston would still work, but you will just have an extra stick left over.
