Ok finally got a spec I’m almost happy with, just have a couple of choices to make, can you please let me know your thoughts on the below:

Antec Six Hundred Gaming
Corsair PSU 620W
Scythe Ninja II HeatPipe Cooler with 120mm Fan socket
Samsung 1000GB Spinpoint

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Quad Core CPU 2.83GHz L2 Cache 12MB 1333MHz
Or
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 LGA775 'Wolfdale' "Overclocking E0 Stepping" 3.33GHz

AND

Asus P5E3 LGA775 Intel X38 DDR3
2x - OCZ 2GB DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Platinum (2x1GB) Dual Channel DDR3 (OCZ3P13332GK)

Or

Asus P5E Intel X38 DDR2
GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB8500C5DC)

Is the extra worth it for the DDR3? Should i get a faster Dual Core or a Quad? I’ll be gaming and video encoding a little. I’ve got a 4870 1GB and might Crossfire at a later date.
Thanks in advance

It depends how much video encoding you're doing, I'd probably go for the quad core if I was you, although advice on here will probably be 50/50 so it'll probably come down to personal choice!

I'd stick with DDR2 ram for now, it all depends on when and how big you're next upgrade is going to be! DDR2 will be fine with that system, I'm just gunna wait until I upgrade to a nehalem system and do it all at once! (cpu, motherboard and ram), again, probably personal preferance though, and how much budget matters!

Cheers for the advice.

Decisions, decisions...this is the other combination tempting me (and a little cheaper)

GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB8500C5DC)

Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Good enough for the Quad or 4GH with the E8600?

I don't know much about p45 motherboards, so Id wait untill someone else comments, but I can't see why there'd be anything wrong with that! that's what I'd probably go for if I was building now!

From all I've seen the Asus P5Q boards are all top boards. I'm building a system myself arount the P5Q-Deluxe, E8500 and the same memory as you.
If you want a decent overclock on the E8600 you'll need a good after market cooler for it. But that's certainly the kinda rig I'd go for.

Almost there!
I’ve got the below:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Quad Core CPU 2.83GHz L2 Cache 12MB 1333MHz (missed out on the Q6600 so want to try a Quad!)

GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB8500C5DC)

Last decision to make...

Asus P5E Intel X38 DDR2

Or

Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Anyone convince me one way or the other?

Anyone? (buying tomorrow)

the only reason to get an x38 mobo is if your crossfiring, the p45's are much better boards.

didnt know an antec 600 gaming case existed??

Sorry I mean the Antec 900.

Thinking of Xfire in the future, although I7 may about then so maybe i should p45...
