Looking to build a new PC for general use and playing the odd game. Already have a Samsung 913N 19" LCD so limited to lower resolutions.

Have the specced the following having looked at this excellent forum over the last week:

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £76.99
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £74.99
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail £71.99
OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3G1333LV4GK) £77.64
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black £42.99
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply £60.99
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £39.99
Sony Optiarc AD-7240S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.99
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Low Profile CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775) £17.99
Arctic Cooling MX-3 Thermal Compound £7.14

Budget was £500 (ish) and the above comes in at just under £500 and I still have to include a gfx card !! I just cannot make up my end what card to go for, would be grateful for any advice.

The OCZ memory is low in stock so looking at Corsair 4GB (2X2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMV4GX3M2A1333C9) @ £74.58.

Also looking at the 600w version of the OCZ ModXtream though not sure if I need it.

Would be greatful for any replies.

The Arctic cooler wont fit that board, you need the AMD version, these also come pre-applied with MX-2 OR MX-3 compound.

What gpu are you thinking of using.

Edit: What case will you be using?

Thanks for reply RJC and lemzip.

Case is Antec 300. Happy with the stock cooler but thinking about trying to disable the other 2 cores and overclocking. What Cooler would you recommend for this that would fit in the case ?

I spent about a week coming up with the spec I have and just cannot make up my mind about the gpu. Can't justify spending over £100 but want the odd game that I do play to be playable at half decent resolution. Any suggestions ? Not bother about DX11 so happy with older tech cards.

The spec is doing my head in and I just want to get it ordered before my current machine dies on me !

Use this cooler and go for a ATI 4850 GPU out of stock at the mo, or even the 4870 for £100.00.

Did you mean enable the other 2 cores rather than disable as its already a dual core, you end up with a 0 core cpu :p

Enable the extra 2 cores I meant, what a dumbass I am !

Updated spec with proper cooler:

OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3G1333LV4GK) £77.64
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £76.99
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £74.99
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail £71.99
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro PWM CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2) £18.99
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply £60.99
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black £42.99
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £39.99
Sony Optiarc AD-7240S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.99

That saves me money on paste and comes in at £485.62 without gpu.

Can the 4850 be found with 1Gb ? I think £100 would really by my limit. Do I still need to spend as much as that ?

Have a look for the ATI 4670 or 4770, they are priced around £63 - £73 pounds used the 4670 on my system which played fairly well at lower res.

I think £100 for gpu is more realistic then. Don't want to buy a cheaper card and found out that games aren't all that playable.

How does the Gigabyte at 4870 compare at £100 compare with this 5750 at £103 ? or even 5770 though £120 and over budget !

comes down to what games you play, the 4870 would personally be my choice with price/what you get for it but let us know the games you play.

Thanks for reply lemzip.

The last game I played was HL2 about 5 years ago ! and I don't even know if I will even get time to play them much with my new system hence trying to justify spending £100 on gpu, even the PC may be over specced for what IU will be using it for !

If I do get the time then I will probably buy some older games that I have missed like call of duty world at war and the newer modern warfares.

Are any of the NVidia's worth considering ?
