Final thoughts before RMA

Trying to diagnose problems with "out of range" and "no signal" errors on display. This is the last effort prior to sending mobo and cpu back for possible replacement which could take up to 28 days. Any thoughts into diagnosing would help. System has been built for over a year prior without issue.
GPU has been in PCIE slot 1 and I have been using #1 GPU display port out all this time. CPU has been overclocked from 4 to 4.6 all this time. GPU has not been overclocked at all.
1. tried changing resolution/gsync - no change
2. tried changing cable - no change
3. tried changing screens (with same model Asus PG279q) - no change
4. tried changing to PCIE slot # 2 - error went away but came back shortly after
5. moved to PCIE slot#3 - error went away but came back shortly after
6. moved GPU back to slot #1 - used #2 display port out on GPU - runs fine
7. tried different GPU (GTX 970 G1) - issue still there
8. uninstalled reinstalled drivers - no change
9. updated mobo bios - no change
10. tried safe mode in windows - no change
11. tried safe mode on GPU - no change
I have stress tested CPU and GPU to see if there are any errors - none. Everything else works without issue (although after bios update I can't seem to get my ram back up to 3733mhz).
Any ideas ??

not without totally stripping my spare system .. ohhh don't want to go there. One is bad enough .. Oh and I did swap out my GPU and try it in a different system and the display port #1 worked without an issue .. so I think I can count out the GPU as the problem ..

yep tried that .. without overclock with safe mode in windows and safe mode on GPU (although that's not overclocked). Thought the bios update might have done something but no. The mobo was returned to OCUK and deemed to be ok. This time it's the mobo and cpu that are going back. They reckon that it might be cpu based. I just wanted to count out all the obvious and not so obvious.
The fault can occur at any time too. Usually just after windows starts, other times it's from boot (no bios display at all). Although at the moment I haven't had a fault with display port #2 from the GPU .. Oh and i have tried altering the hz on the screen to see if that makes a difference .. nope ..

I've backed up my c and d drives including windows and made a recovery disc via windows in case it all goes wrong .. I use c drive just for the os and d for software .. feeling quite ill at the thought of re-install ... but seriously, could it be drivers/windows ??

Yep I used onboard graphics and it worked fine at 165hz and 2560x1440. I have swapped out cables from my other system as well. I have two Asus PG279Q screens and the fault is there with both screens and both cables. So thus far i think I can count out GPU, cables and screens.
At the moment I have no problems running 165hz at 2560x1440 from GPU display port #2. I've run all the stress tests I can think of for GPU and CPU with not a single fault. I also tried pulling the power supply out from the screen while in the faulty gpu display port #1 and it made no difference .. no signal

used DDU and lost both #1 and #2 display ports on the GPU (no signal). Had to swap PCIE slots (moved one slot down) and used #2 port from GPU. Drivers just installing now. About to reboot

hmmm reinstalled drivers - shut down. put GPU back to PCIE slot #1 and put cable back to display port #1 on GPU. restarted and it's booted into windows. Error saying display drivers did not work, but I now have the display port working ??? I shall try and reinstall the driver again

well slap me with a wet cabbage and call me martha :D

Reinstalled again and I have the GPU running in PCIE slot #1 and I have display port #1 running at 2560x1440 @ 165hz ... what the freaking hell ????
Why .. just why .. weeks of this freaking problem and now it's working .... Was almost at the verge of a psychotic episode ..
What he heck would have caused this in the first place ??
Now I just need help getting my ram back up to 3733mhz .. new thread time I think .. thank you so much everybody .. I'll run a few tests and make sure it's all stable .. huge sigh ..
