Ok have been reading the forum and counting my pennies. I think realistically I have to go for a simple proven yet with some future build so ive listed this to date:

CP-134-AM AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM) £91.99 £91.99
MB-101-AS Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS) £51.99 £51.99
CA-048-AN Antec SLK3800BUK Black Quiet Midi Tower Case - 400W SmartPower PSU (CA-048-AN) £54.99 £54.99
HD-111-MD Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 17 160GB 6G160E0 SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-111-MD) £35.95 £35.95
CD-054-SO Sony AW-G170AB2 18x DVD±RW x12 Ram Dual Layer DVD-Writer - (Black) OEM (CD-054-SO) £18.95 £18.95

Subtotal £253.87 VAT £44.43 Total £298.30

Now intend to add a graphics card that can handle Oblivion and 1Gb or 2Gb of RAM. Guidence on both accepted remaining budget is £201.70p.

The choice of 160Gb HD is driven by having 2 external IDE 160Gb avaiable , if need be I suppose it could be reduced. Second optical device is a CDRW I allready have. Monitor will have to remain a Iiyama 17" CRT until I can save for one of the Hanns.

Comment?

The Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO) on this week only is a very good buy.

But squezing some good ram into that budget is pretty tricky, especially with ram prices at the moment.

If the remaining budget isn't too strict I'd probably suggest these parts, ignoring the delivery(which you would have to pay anyway) it isn't much over the budget. It is easier to upgrade Ram later than the graphics card so I'd get the best available at the time. I might also change the hard drive to a Samsung 160gb which is cheaper and probably quieter as well.

This Week Only lasts until Thursday(normally around lunchtime but no guarantees) so you will need to order Wednesday night by the latest probably. It looks good now though :)

Persuaded me re Conroe

After much dithering and financial squeezing I have decided to go Conroe and extend the budget to approx £600 range.

So far listed some basic components decisions:

HS-017-AR Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) (HS-017-AR) £11.99 £14.09
CP-135-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN) £107.99 £126.89
HD-024-SA Samsung SpinPoint P HD160JJ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-024-SA) £33.95 £39.89
CD-054-SO Sony AW-G170AB2 18x DVD±RW x12 Ram Dual Layer DVD-Writer - (Black) OEM (CD-054-SO) £18.95 £22.27
CD-020-SO Sony DDU-1615 DVD-ROM (Black) - OEM (CD-020-SO) £10.50 £12.34

and hoping to be able to go for:

GX-044-CO Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO) £114.99 £135.11

though may have to drop back to something around £100 mark care to suggest?

Which leaves me with Case / Mobo and RAM.

Case: Considering though should I add the optionsal 120 fan to this?
CA-040-AN Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Case - 450W Smart Power PSU (CA-040-AN) £66.99 £78.71

Now for Mobo / Ram I am assuming Socket 775 naturally but this is where I need input from u guys assuming 1Gb min RAm but which Mobo? If I limit to £600 with above case / graphics ive only left myself £170 for both :(.

There is minor flexibility though i.e <650

I'd probably drop the optical drive to free a bit of cash, so you have approx £180 to spend to get the motherboard and Ram if you were to stick strictly to the £600 but I'd suggest you go over slightly and get this combination as it will be good for overclocking.

MB-061-GI Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI)
£91.99 £91.99
MY-059-CS Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-5400C4 TwinX (2x512MB) (MY-059-CS)
£69.99 £69.99
Subtotal £161.98
Shipping (City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)) £8.25
VAT £29.80
Total £200.03

Cheers final list seems do-able, anything minor I as a first time builder may have overlooked?

Thnx final task for me is to make sure I havent mis-laid the Windows XP CD , though it lacks SP2 which is a pain.

Have an ld 80Gb IDE with XP installed and patched until 8 weeks back that was rescued from old blown system. Current plan is to install this as IDE slave to recover data.

Is their a practical way to use it as Master in new system and migrate to SATA drive.

Have got copy of Norton Ghost to hand.

p.s Do OCUk have any policy re first order delivery to bill address as was hoping to ask for delviery to work address,

If you want to Ghost the hard drive to the new SATA then you may need to install the SATA drivers before copying the hard drive although Intel chipsets are normally pretty good about recognising the drives right away.

If you can't do that but do have the XP CD then you can install it and then 'recover' the additional hard drive space(somewhere around 30gb depending on formatting etc) by using the Drive/Disk Management tool under Administrative tools.

Finally I'm not sure about OcUKs policy, a lot of places will allow you to ship to a different address if you use a credit card but not with a debit card, the best thing to do is phone up and ask I'd think :)

Yeah may try creating a new SP" inclusive XP CD first on old machine, done it before but will use a handy web guide to do so.

Think going straight to SATA with XP Sp2 is preferable as it forces me to lose all the crud in old os setup and start clean.
