So I'm interested in a laptop under £1K that is preferably 15 inch and has a 960/65m (970m just jumps far too much in price for me and I'm not fussed, but it would be nice).

My problem is that I have no idea how important having a 4th, 5th or 6th gen i7 is.

Also prob some things I've not thought of...

I've seen this, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-rog-gl552vw-dm201t-15.6-fhd-ips-intel-i7-6700hq-nvidia-gtx960m-4gb-gddr5-gaming-laptop-lt-228-as.html

And,

(realise it's over 1K, but still)

Also have no desire for optical drives, but don't mind if something comes with one...just annoying.

The Dell 7559. Theres a thread about it here -https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18709417

Alternatively for £1000 I'd insist on it having a thunderbolt 3 port for future expandibility.

Is the 7559 the definite goto right now? The panel lottery and other niggles is putting me off a bit.

Only you can decide that really. The hardware is unbeatable for the price.

I've read reviews about people having one of the "poorer" panels, but they insist on them being perfectly acceptable. How much will you be plugging he lappy into an external screen?

Likely never, never know though.
