Finally going dual core, just wondering how do these actually work? say i wanted to play a game while burning a cd or whatever, and what programs out there are multithreaded so i can test this out?

Getting a 3800+

Games wise hardly any, although COD2 is supposed to be one that uses a second core if available. Haven't tried it since getting my X2 4600. Not sure what others.

dual core will certainly help with concurrent programs on your desktop.

there will be plenty of games making use of dual core cpu's in the next year

I've had to put a hold on getting a x2 3800 for a few weeks unfortunately, but whats the typical overclocks likely to get from these and whats the multiplier 8?

EDIT: Did a quick google and it has 10X! wow thats really good overclocking shouldnt be so hard to achieve decent levels!

I went from a 3700 at 3ghz to a dual core at 3ghz and the differeence was huge in farcry and need for speed. Most likely due to 2nd core being able to sort out bckground tasks but even so was a big difference

Ive just ordered a 4800+ and when I read through the thread in the link there seems to be conflicting evidence re the hotfix, drivers and optimizer. Is there another site where these have been tested properly that you know of?

just install the amd driver only you will be set

right had to delay it for a couple of weeks but ordering it next week, right so we got cod2 games wise that uses it, mgith give it a install again, anything else bar 3dmark 06?

when you upgrade from single to dual core you have to reinstall windows >...is that correct? is there a way round it to anable the 2 second cpu?

It's pot luck, I changed cpu's and windows didn't pick up the second core and trying to update the driver from uni to multi for some reason wasn't possible, so in the end i had to reinstall, or rather dual boot so i could transfer my data across. Now i just need to reinstal or repair XP Pro. Both cores are seen and system runs smoooooooooooth now. :)

No you don't need to. XP will automatically detect the new hardware and install the drivers. Also make sure to grab AMD's x2 patch.
