Good and bad news yesterday...
My manager resigned and was escorted off site straight away (normal policy)
So I went and found my trusty old desktop that he took off me to upgrade, and I also bought my 8800Gt in from home and it is crunching away merrily again :-)

OK, I now need a gpu for my ancient home rig, Im going to scour the bay of E for a 2nd hand ati gpu as I want to finally start crunching MW on more than my CPU
The problem is that my machine is a dell, and that means 305W PSU, though the PSU is a good one and is rated for 36A on the two 12V rails. It was fine running my 8800GT for the last 3 yrs crunching seti..

So I need a 2nd hand ati card, that ideally will fit in the power limits I have ( 26 amps and maybe 105W total draw) Im basing those figures on the 8800GT that was in there, as I dont think I have much headroom above that..

What series should I be looking at, I think the 38xx are to old now, what about the 48xx or maybe a 5830, as the power draw should come down a bit with each generation? Im going to start googling and see what I can discover, just thought Id throw this out there to see what others think..

ATI HD Radeon 5830
ATI HD Radeon 4770
ATI HD Radeon 4830

Or you can get 4850s and 4870s for under £100

Having had a google, I think the 5830 will draw too much power as they recommend 40A on the 12V rails with 177W maximum power draw
Im thinking the 48xx might be a better bet, will have a look when I get in from work tonight...

May the good lord have mercy on your soul...errrr if ya find any reasonably priced let me know. Don't like buying from fleabay and ocuk ones seem a bit pricey :)

My 4770 gets over 75k and is running in my htpc with a low end psu, having said that it can get quite loud in its confined enviroment.
A 4850 will give slightly more ppd but not much, whichever you can get the cheapest is the best bet:)
