Finally going to upgrade.. [Spec Check]

As the title says I am finally going to upgrade the following rig:

AMD Opteron 146 @ 2.8ghz
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR
Corsair 2x1gb PC4000

To...

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
Asus P5W DH Deluxe (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

Does that all sound ok and should I see a big difference, I keeping my Sapphire X1900XTX for the minute but should my in game performance increase at all?

I am also keeping my Hiper 580w Modular, it should cope ok shouldnt it?

Also what overclock should I expect on the E4300 using my Zalman Reserator cooler

you should get the e4300 up to around 3.2 - 3.4ghz

I dont know what the l2 cache is on the opty 146 but you should see a slight performance increase on that...

I can't see that much of a difference to be totally honest when gaming....

you will see a slight difference but nothing spectular...i think the opty 146 is dual core isnt it? if it isnt dual core then you will see a major difference...
 
I'd suggest swapping the motherboard for a Gigabyte DS3P as although the 4300 has a high multiplier (9x) the Gigabyte is better at reaching high FSB speeds since it is based on the 965 chipset rather than the 975 of that Asus.

If the Hiper's rails are stable you should be fine although there have been a fair few giving up the ghost. :)
 
if you're going water cooled any reason you're not looking at a 6300/6600 ?

as mentioned ds3p board would be a decent bet.

Also I was thinking of going for the E4300 as my watercooling is nothing special and the E4300 has a higher multi.

Which is better as the E6300 is only £2 more.

Nope the Gigabyte DS3P which is more or less the DS4 now but cheaper and is supposed to have had all the problems ironed out.

I don't think it will make too much difference for you whichever one you go for of the CPUs, the 4300 doesn't rely so much on the FSB speed and the Ram being able to match it but then you are getting decent Ram so it shouldn't be much of an issue. You may need higher voltage for getting high clocks on the 4300 but not everyone seems to find that. Put simply I don't think you can lose whichever one you go for. :)
 
I've been told that the e4300 is easier to overclock as you don't have to o/c the memory, whereas you do with the e6300, because of the multiplier. I'm not sure what this means, but it seems to make sense.
 
I'd be careful about the Hiper, a lot of bad comments and bad quality control have been spread around...
Opt for the Corsair 620w?

As for the Hiper, I have been running it for over 18 months now and had no problems so no reason to change really.

It might not look as pretty but since when has pretty ever guaranteed overclocking? :p More seriously the DS4 has a slightly better cooling system for the motherboard with the heatpipes but other than that the DS3P has all the features and supports quad-core plus it is cheaper and newer. It is up to you as either will work fine but my own money would go to the DS3P if I was buying. :)

Maybe to clear up benlanky's comments slightly, the higher multiplier of the 4300 means you don't need to overclock the Ram as far to reach 3ghz say, with a 6300 the Ram would need to go to 428.6mhz (3000/7) which is slightly above PC6400 speeds, with a 4300 the Ram needs to go to 333.3r (3000/9) which is PC5300 speeds. However the general rule is the faster the FSB/Ram speeds then for a given value the PC will be marginally faster, although this is probably only noticeable in benchmarks really. There are better and more in-depth guides available but that is the rough and ready answer.

No problem, I try to drink largely whenever possible.
 
You should get to about 3.4-3.6GHz with the ram and proper cooling. But it depends if you get a good chip or not. The E6300 are true Allendales now and dont overclock just as well as their Conroe counterparts.
