It looks like it suffering from the overheating issue. Within 5 mins of playing PGR3 I see all sorts of polygons and shapes over the screen making it unplayable. I can play Fight Night 3 fine but get some audio issues.
The 360 is on a table very well ventelated area near an open window so I have covered that off. Its also a lot noisier than I expected it to be.

The problem I have is that I got the 360 as a "gift" with a mobile phone contract. I called CPW but they said all faults have to go direct through Microsoft and they cannot send a replacement.

Does anyone know how long a RMA takes with Microsoft?

Surely CPW should be looking after it as your contract is with them. free or not it should be fit for purpose.

Well there is also a concern that they have a bad batch from Microsoft, but your correct.

Agreed, the only reason Id deal with the retailer is if were on the high street. Will just be a painful process trying to send it back to CPW then hasing them up for a new one. Get on the blower to MS. :)

sorry but i really dont trust CPW/P4U/OSPS, frankly i think once you've walked out of the store with whatever your buying you should avoid dealing with them, i've bought in P4U on a staff deal (i work for a related company) and still had no end of hassle with them, after sales in these places is very poor

seems strange they would suggest they maybe had a bad batch, knowing them they knew it was a bad batch before they got them and bought them cheap and are using it to bump the % profit on their phone sales knowing that they can give people with problems the run around until they decide to deal with MS instead

I'd echo n3vermind and Nokkon's statements. Return it to MS because theres a strong chance that CPW themselves know they have a bad batch. I've seen this before from them when they were doing contracts which gave you a 'free' PSP complete with screen defects.

There is a "bad batch" problem with recent stock. Argos stores have received an email from head office about it. The failure rate has been extremely high in the last month or so.
I've had to return mine twice to Argos, and I was speaking to the manager about it last week.

Hmm I had thought that the quality control problems were now a thing of the past - apparently not then.
Perhaps, though we don't really know when specifica batches are made etc and how long they've been sat in warehouses etc.

Only one way to find out though :p, pdw8, when was your 360 made? (Think it'll tell you somewhere on one of the labels on the 360 with a manufacturing date).

hi,
i didnt realise that some of the xbox 360 suffers from overheating, i thought id got away from problem that by moving from pc gaming to console gaming. which part of the xbox 360 needs to be exposed for the heat to be dissipated? i see there are ventilation holes on both sides of the console but only feel heat coming out from the back. my console is currently sat between a set of drawers and a sub woofer, theres loads of space at the back but the sides its only about 2cm. is this adequate? i am not having any problems that i can notice.

Only faulty ones so I wouldn't worry.

I'm sure you'd be able to get a perfectly normal working one to suffer too if you stuck it in a tightly packed cabinet, or an oven at gas mark 3 :p

Well yeah :p But I mean they don't have an inherent design problem where people need to take special steps to keep it cool :)

I've got my 360 standing vertically, on a tiled floor, and it barely gets warm.

The 2 faulty ones:
1st one took 2 goes to power up - the first time I got no display
2nd one froze when it tried to save a game for the first time. Subsequent saves were OK.

The right hand side of the 360 is where the air for the fans is drawn in so i'd give that a nice lot of space. And also the psu which has a fan in it too.
