So its on order and set to arrive tomorrow, thanks to everyone who chipped in with help and advice.... honestly, I can't wait, i'm like a kid in a sweet shop, last machine I built was 4-5 years ago! Anyway, here's what I ordered...

MB: Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3P
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4300
Cooler: Noctua NH-U12F
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz
GFX: EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS SuperClocked 320MB
HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

I'm hoping/expecting to see a big performance increase from my current system (see sig below for current spec), is that a fair assumption? What do you think??

You're in for a treat.

Make sure you overclock though! :p

Oh yes, no doubt :)

My only problem is I have work to do this weekend... do I risk tearing my old machine apart and building this new one and hope everything goes smoothly and it only takes a few hours... or do I wait till my work is finished...? decisions decisions, why can't life be more simple :p

Nice ;)

Just curious, you got a 'decent' PSU to go with that?

I would wait, its always best rather than doing a rushed job. You can then allow for a few glitches in the installation process. In the long-run waiting is the better option :)

Heh, funny you should ask. I asked the same question to the forum yesterday about my current PSU - Seasonc S12 500W Silent ATX2.0 :D

It should be !

Should be fine mate,
Nice new system, I'm holding off until the new ATi card is released.
What to see proper benchmarks and performance increase before I shell out for a whole new rig.

And it should make 8800 drop in price.

I know you're right... I should have just ordered everything tomorrow for delivery on Monday, that way there'd be no temptations

More than enough :)

Post up pics of the build, if you can. & any questions don't hesitate to ask ;)

Also, this might be useful

I'll try to post some pics as I go. That link's pretty cool, the stuff on overclocking and benchmarking might be useful... i'm a bit out of touch in that department !

Parts arrived yesterday, well all except for GFX card and Hard drive so won't be building until Monday Tuesday now anyway.... there's a problem solved !

My first thought upon opening the box was "OMG how BIG is that heat sink". The Noctua is a giant... the last cooler I bought was a cooler master for my Barton 2500 (forget the name) so forgive me for being surpised by the size. I actually had to check if it would fit in my case... thankfully it does... but i'm still not convinced once the fan is added that it isn't going to cause a problem !

Hmm... to be honest I didn't even consider it! The 6400-C4 has always bee the one I wanted to get and after comparing other systems it seemed the most popular option... I know popular isn't always best but I thought the 6400 would do a better job overclocking.

Well - Started the new build tonight... still waiting on HDD and GFX to come (should bew tomorrow) so I thought I'd make a start on the Mobo, CPU, RAM & Cooler. I knew the RAM and CPU would be a breeze, it was the cooler that had me a bit worried. It was a bit of a learning curve really, the last non-stock CPU cooler I installed was simple click and go !!!

Anyway, CPU went in first, followed by the RAM making sure that it was set correctly for dual channel operation.

Next came the brackets ready for the cooler, I had to check the orientation within the case to make sure airflow was to the back of the case and to double check that the cooler was actually going to fit.... thankfully... it does :)

Only real trouble installing anything so far was with the thermal paste, wasn't quite sure how to apply or where to apply (direct on cooler or cpu) but finding a guide wasn't too hard.

Here's a few pics for those interested so you can see how things are looking so far. More pics to follow tomorrow !
