i7 Mac Mini, come to daddy !

Sad thing is, ordered today, expected delivery the 22nd of November, 2 days after we leave on our honeymoon, gutted.

In the end we went for an i7 mac mini, atv2 for the bedroom, and a 3tb time capsule as well as a 32gb ipad 2 which we'd also been umming and ahhing about for a while. Really rather pleased, and thank god for student discount.

Only question is, how likely is it that this date will be brought forward?

Yes, there's a very good chance that you'll get it a few days before that. The last three iMacs I've had delivered (don't ask) have come earlier than originally estimated.

Lovely little setup. You could have added an airport express connected to a set of speakers which will give you superb wireless music streaming via apples new magic AirPlay!

Already got one ;) and the iPod touch can then act as a remote !

I just love the way apple stuff just.... works.

God, still having noisy hard drive problems? gutted.

All I did was spec i7 instead of i5 cpu (seemed worth it) I called the helpline when the e-mail came through and she said its just to cover if they need to order in parts. I'm hoping this is a common customisation and there is one sat in a box ready to go !

Nope, all sorted now - The three I'm referring to are the one back earlier this year and the two in the last week or so.

Ah cool! Can you do a mini review when you get it please? Im still tempted by one and would like to know how good it is for a few games :)

Hope you dont mind me saying but that is one hell of high a price for what actual hardware is in those machines! Is it justifiable do you think?

I can see what you're saying, I nearly bought an iMac but the price for the spec got the better of me in the end. I would have paid for it happily if I could afford it, but had to bite the bullet and go for a PC. Similar spec (though better graphics card for BF3 =] ) and the ability to expand/upgrade later on.

It's all personal preference. The OS is definitely worth it's money imo....though I've been working with them everyday for nearly 4 years so its just second nature to me now.

If you compare like for like and stick to all in ones, the price difference is not as great as you might think, though some manufacturers do certainly offer a few extras even so. Bigger hard drives, more RAM and bigger screens on lower end models in some cases. But then it is quite a few months since the current iMacs came out so I guess this is a natural consequence of Apple's upgrade cycles.

I guess it is more a case of whether the all in one is something that appeals or not. I'm more of a conventional desktop PC guy in general myself, though I'd certainly be tempted by the iMacs if I could convince my Wife to switch to the dark side.

Edit: And yes, I just noticed this was about the Mini, though same principle applies in many respects. Compactness versus spec.

No, I ordered it as it was burning a hole in my pocket....Jokes !

I've spent countless pounds over the years on PC stuff, and spent equally countless hours keeping the stuff working and messing around with problems.

My Mac stuff has always just... worked. I know its that fanboy cliche, but its true. On top of that, initial price may be high, but it retains its value so well that your price to change when it comes to an upgrade if you end up selling 2nd hand is much lower than if it was PC kit. I bought my 1.6GHz Core Duo Intel Mac Mini for something like £270 quid in January 2010, I've just sold it now for £230. £40 loss over 20 odd months? can't be bad. Especially when you consider how old that spec machine is.

I want to reduce my effort on messing around with home IT, and with apple being TRUE plug and play, its a win win situation.

Yup. My Mini I've tended to treat like an appliance rather than a traditional PC. Never had any drive to play with it other than up the RAM and throw in an SSD. Did all my media and ran a couple of virtual servers for Exchange & Lync. On, forgotten about - just worked.
