Finally, proper PC gaming at a desk..!!

Guess I'm lucky that my wife doesn't mind me sneaking off upstairs for "tap taps" as she calls it (that's "tap taps" with a T, not an F, you filth) while she's watching TV, although I do get the odd comment about not wanting to spend any time with her :)

I have thought about setting up a desk in the living room heck I even think she wouldn't mind watching me play a few games on the TV occasionally if they were the right type of game with a story (she didn't mind watching me playing Heavy Rain on the PS3 for example).

Originally this office was going to be used by both of us (it has two desks, filing cabinets etc) but she normally just uses her laptop on the dining room table so we never spend any time together here. Currently musing is whether I should set up a secondary PC in the dining room on a small desk or something.

As highlighted above if we have kids I may be forced to give up my den anyway.

Agnes to answer your question, no I don't ever stop her going out or doing her thing apart from refusing to watch anymore rubbish on telly... I said no to the rubbish telly as it was getting beyond a joke and I was getting miserable..

Right..

The man cave is progressing nicely..

I've gone from this, before we moved into a much bigger three bed house..

Missing the new laptop, back to my old Dell with its aging and now very slow 5650M as sold my Samsung 700G to pay for the Alienware.

The ASUS screen has a stuck pixel, lovely. Nice green dot so I'm going to see if I can RMA that.

To be honest, i've had enough of waiting for stuff to get this up and running.

Dell have been telling me there is a big delay so no idea when I'll get the laptop.

The keyboard I ordered is delayed. Using my existing Dell keyboard.

Amazon where I got the desk and chair from, well the couriers must have jumped up and down and left the boxes outside in the rain.. Awful, awful condition they arrived in. Amazed they where not damaged.

Overclockers however sent their items on time, good packing and good service all around, shame screen they sent has a dude pixel.. : - (

PS3 is under the desk, also have a 2TB NAS under the desk for media streaming, 2.1 speakers as they'll be good enough as I've also got my headphones and a laptop cooler with USB hub for making it easy to lift off and use the laptop on the go without having to unplug the keyboard, mouse and external drive.. Just audio, HDMI and power lead to unplug.

Still waiting for like I say -

Gaming keyboard
Laptop
Desk light

I'm getting there. Missus put the flower thingy there, saying it has to have one thing on there to remind me I have a family?? Can live with that. Man Cave is open, but soon to improve with more new kit....

In my experience the best way to get a hobby accepted is to do it in front of the missus. Generally all women want is for you to be in a room with them even if you're not paying them any attention. Once you're out of sight you break the mystical bond that they believe exists. Just set up the desk in the room, she will probably be happy as larry. :)

and hence the reason I'm still getting a laptop. I can move it easily into the living room to keep her happy when she thinks 'the bond' is missing..

Me personally, I'd be happy enough for her to just leave me be, I don't need to know where she is - I don't care TBH.

Its not that I don't care actually, its just, well I see her in the morning, we have the hugs etc then, I see her at meal times, we go out quite a bit together, we socialise , so when I'm home.. Well don't want to watch x factor or big brother.. Just want to enjoy a hobby.. Sadly her hobby seems to be me.. and watch crud on telly.. Yeah, thanks for that..

Looks great, well done! Your previous set up would have driven me to insanity. Not sure about the flower on the desk or the idea behind it, you should have denied that really you don't need that **** clogging up your mancave!. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile, before long it will have evolved into a bunch of flowers, then a mirror will go up and it gradually it will become a makeup desk :(.

UPDATE to this thread...

Finally got my little man-cave all setup and running and its pretty good, does me and I can enjoy my games and then when the missus moans, I lift the laptop off the laptop cooler and move into the living room.. Even got my PS3 hooked up, which is cool.

As you can see before I got my alienware I was ready to just plonk onto my cooling pad and play...

teddy bear is a birthday gift from my little girl, best not remove it as even though she is only a baby mummy will be a tad upset... Anyhow, its fine and better then what I was using before this.. lol

You know, I'd never buy a Dell, HP or Alienware Desktop, but I've had a Dell laptop and its been fine, I read so many good things (apart from price) about the alienware, that after I got an amazing amount off the M17x I went for it..

I think some of the comments in the thread are, well erm ok. The M17x was much cheaper then then the ASUS G75 and had a better GPU.

I think its maybe the fact Dell charge a fortune for alienware laptops as honestly all the reviews i read said it was without doubt a real performer and worth purchasing..

The huge Alienware thread speaks highly of them as well..

As for bloatware, well I can remove that not an issue... Oh well guess haters goner hate.

What specs on the M17x did you get, and how did you get discount? dabbling with getting a new laptop myself ATM.

Although it's hard to justify, my current laptop (sig), is still coping absolutely fine with current games, with a driver update actually getting to play on the current CoD engine with 90~ FPS at 1900x1080 res/high gfx :( I have the thirst for a new toy, argh!

p.s, loving that token stapler on your desk :p

My spec is in my sig, its a solid laptop once I got one that worked, thats another story, but when these laptops work, they work well. I can run skyrim modded out quite a lot and maintain a healthy 45 - 60fps maxed out v sync on with ENB SSAO enabled.. I spec'd up my laptop on the dell configuration website and then called them, after a few attempts I got something like 25% off, but I reckon I was well lucky..

Screenshots all ingame, totally stunning and very capable laptop to game on -

My old samsung with its 6990M would have struggled a tad with graphics like that, and my old Dell studio with its 5650 couldn't even run Skyrim unless it was medium details 1280 x 720... forget modding the game lol

i'm happy with it, plays every single game I throw at it with no problems at all....

Well done on getting your new man cave finally setup, i managed to get my room back after we did a loft conversion end of last year so i now have a proper desk and and room again. Ignore all those saying you need to man up they just don't understand. I was in a similar position to you married to fiery Irish lass, and all the nagging about not spending enough time with her, so comprise was needed and as is often the case I had to start it.

And any way they have the power to deny certain pleasurable bedroom past times, I'd burn my PC before I let that happen!!
