Hi,

I've been thinking about it for ages, but on tues decided to go for it and ordered a black macbook. It was delivered today but no-one was in to collect it, so its now coming tomorrow.

Anyway... few questions...

1) Do i need to give the battery a full charge or discharge the first time i use it?
2) Is there a padded case you recommend for looking after the macbook? ideally including a pocket for a mouse and the charger etc.
3) How much is 4gb of memory going to cost? and is there any reason to keep my 2gb after i upgrade... or does everyone just sell it to offset the cost of the 4gb. Do i need buffered or unbuffered?
4) What mouse do people recommend? im looking for a bluetooth one. ideally black or white. i've heard the apple mighty ones are not good.
5) Is there a good website for OSX beginners, or a few online videos to watch or something?

Thats it for now.

Cheers
:D

1. Not sure, i didn't though.

2. I bought one of the LArobe Sleeves so i can pop it in a normal bag so no one knows i am carrying a laptop.

3. I am ordering some of this on monday. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-113-CR&groupid=701&catid=930&subcat=932

4. Get something like the Logitech VX Revolution maybe? I have the Mighty Mouse as i wanted one to match my MacBook :p

5. Some of the tutorials on the Apple site are ok, but other than that I'm not sure. Some of the info in here is handy - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17745774

Is there a bluetooth version of that logitech? can't find one.

Cheers for the memory link. So can you get buffered AND unbuffered? which is best or is only unbuffered (like you're ordering) supported?

That sleeve looks ok but i'd like one that's got a pocket on the outside for charger/mouse ideally.

I did a full charge but I don't think it matters. Install 'coconut battery' if you want to keep an eye on it's capacity.

There are plenty around, get one specifically for a MacBook and not a generic one as they don't fit as well. Avoid the Tucano Microfiber one as they leave marks on white MacBooks.

I bought a 512MB model and ordered 2GB elsewhere. I would have sold the 2x256MB but I didn't get around to it and they aren't worth much. But for your 2GB you can probably get some of the cost back, it's generic memory and will work in many notebooks. I think mine was unbuffered but it was the only type availiable where I bought it.

I have the Apple Bluetooth Might Mouse and it is crap, if you want a mouse get one with buttons on. I use a Logitech MX 512 which is a full sized USB mouse but it is comfortable. You can get quite a few Bluetooth mice these day, check out some of Microsoft's.

5) Is there a good website for OSX beginners, or a few online videos to watch or something?

I ended up googling and found some good sites, can't remember which ones now. The important things were how to add/remove applications and to learn the keyboard shourtcuts as Mac users tend to use them more than Windows users. I think there is a dashboard widget that lists all of the keyboard shortcuts which makes it an easy referance (press F12).

Meh i forgot, i keep thinking all wireless mice are bluetooth these days.

what about the LEvertigo shoulder bag? it has some pockets in it that should fit mouse and charger.

I think the memory is only Unbuffered but I'm not too sure. Ill have a look at that now.

Try the sticky in the Mac Software section, it's got some guides and some reading materials for the switchers :)

The apple website is actually awesome.

www.apple.com/whateverprogramyouwanttofindoutabout will have very good info and video tutorials, don't underestimate it.

And as for a mouse, the VX Revolution Notebook version has a really tiny USB dongle that stows in the mouse when you're transporting it, it's pretty handy and it's not too small for prolonged use either, just the right size. I use mine all the time.

I personally would still prefer a BT mouse so you don't need to use a USB port at all.

I'd recommend an STM Alley bag, I bung my macbook in it's Sleeve in that when I need to take more than just the macbook with me.

The one with the tiny USB receiver is the VX Nano. Got one myself and it's really nice. The VX revolution has a normal size receiver, but it also stores in the mouse when not in use. Slightly bigger mouse overall too.
