hey again all!!! right! i know what rig im buying with my £1500 now, i just need a final lil bit of help to put my mind at rest.

i want to buy an amd opteron 165/170 *most probably 165*

just want to know, as an example if i was to get (worst case scenario) a bad stepping opteron that didnt clock that good, do you think it would still outperform a similarly priced processor in the x2 range? ie: x2-4200?

im probably being over paranoid, i just dont wanna screw myself over if i get a bad opteron.

they should all clock a lil bit at least yes?

so bottom line is? which would be better? x2-4200? or an average clocking opteron 165?

hope peeps can help!!! and thanks again!!!

cool, so do you think it could still beat say the x2-4800, if it did clock well?

im going water cooled with an asetek 3fan 120mm rad and antarctica block so hoping to get about 2.6-2.8 at least

The X2's specs list as 2000 because it goes both directions at 1000MHz, the Oppy page doesnt for some reason.
I've owned 1 of each, and can guarantee they both have the same HT bus.

Notice that all AMD64 overclocking guides say to keep it under 1000.

For those speeds I would go for the opty 170 with the 10x multi.
The 165 will clock aswell but needs a good mobo that can support a high FSB.

the 165 has a 9x multi making 2.7ghz a 300 FSB

for 2.8ghz with a 170 you only need a 280 fsb making it easier to reach.

As easyrider said, 10x multiplier is well worth it if you can afford the extra,
Also makes working out what clockseepd your going to be running at from fsb quicker :p
