hi guys

so the 290x has died and it's got to that stage that frankly the whole system needs a bit of a refresh, i mean i'm still running bulldozer so this has been a long time coming.

setting a budget of £1k, and a few notions of where i want to go.

thinking of going to the green team for graphics, amd has served me well but i'm mainly running arma/borderlands a lot and feels like green team might be better placed here, although i'm open to being convinced otherwise.

gonna move to pcie ssd, 500gb because my current 250gb ssd is getting filled to bursting point with only windows and arma on it, figure it's not a bad move.

apart from moving to w10 i kind of don't know what's fun at the minute, figured ryzen's still the hot ticket for cpu's?

had a play about and got this as a basket, which i'm sure is going to need some tweaking:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,020.04 (includes shipping: £11.10)

any thoughts would be welcome, been out of the game for a while so not sure what's good or not these days.

You could get full 1TB SSD capacity to last lot longer for cheaper than that Samsung's brand hype overpricing.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cruc...ata-pcie-m.2-solid-state-drive-hd-06f-cr.html

And in normal use like gaming there's almost no or only little difference between SATA and NVME SSDs:

So if you want NVMe there's certainly no sense to pay more per GB than Corsair MP510 £80.

800TBW endurance beats the snot out of Samsung's 300TBW endurance so even total warranty is better.

Alternately about £20 more gives 1TB Corsair with 1700TBW endurance.

Samsung simply doesn't deliver package worth the luxury prices.

Don't see that bundle worth its price.
That motherboard has only basic level CPU VRM, whose cooling is sabotaged by that plastic garbage.
This would have better VRM with actually proper cooling:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-b450-tomahawk-max-socket-am4-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-33t-ms.html

Ryzen 3600 itself costs only £200.
And 3200MHz CL16 kit is available for only £80.

Google Sabrent Rocket. You can pick up a 1TB for £109.99.

I agree with EsaT regarding the board. The Tomahawk is a much better choice.

Do you need W10 pro ? The Home version should suffice unless there is some feature you need ? In any case I wouldn't pay £150 for it. You should be able to pick up a cheap key from places that sell digital keys for games.

You should be able to get a higher end gpu with the savings.

So for example:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £967.05 (includes shipping: £11.10)

The SSD is just a placeholder for the Sabrent Rocket.

You can probably get a better version of the 2070 super if you are shopping around. So something like a Gigabyte Gaming OC. Might be an extra £30 more than the KFA2 model.

If you can pick up a cheap key for a tenner then you should be more or less around the £1000 mark give or take a few quid if you account for free shipping on here.

thought occurrs, how compatible is the new amd stuff for coolers? i'm currently running a K2 and if it'll fit i don't see any need to change.

edit:

ok, so this looks a little better methinks. i play a lot of modded arma and arma being arma is why i'm more in favour of faster hard drives. also figured i might be able to reclaim a few pennies from selling the old motherboard/cpu/ram and the 750m so that should pay for the os.

3600 + MSI b450 is a must. 3200 or 3600Mhz RAM and a 1TB SSD.
GPU can be either a 5700XT, which has nice price now or a 2700 super if budget allow.
About Windows, you should be able to buy key-only. What PSU are you using?

You would have to ask Alpenfohn if either of these kits would be compatible.

Though for Ryzen 3600 that cooler is as overkill as hunting rodents with Lahti "Elephant gun".

yeah, i'll look into a key only, it's just there as a reminder at the moment.

psu is an ax860I which seemed to feed an overclocked bulldozer and a 290x ok.

look what i do with my anti tank rifles is my own business, besides i preferr the straightforward simplicity of the ptrd ;)

think i'll get the current rig apart today see what it looks like, worst comes to the worst the stock cooler will do for the time it'd take to get something proper ordered.

PSU is certainly enough.
Ryzen is lot less power hogging than "Faildozer", whose strong point was hogging lots of power and turning it into heat for little work done.
Also Radeon 290 X was really power hungry.

Reviews don't show if Alpenfohn Olymp has exactly similar mounting to K2, but assuming ability to use own backplate of motherboards this might work:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/alpe...mp-atlas-and-matterhorn-series-hs-059-al.html
At least those "nuts" with screw thread in both ends look like they could be those rises screwed through motherboard into backplate as base for those brackets.

would pay the extra for extra 2-3 year warranties offered and better cooling

2070s is 2080 under the hood pretty much so runs a little bit warmer then 2070

if your playing ARMA - a CPU intensive /bound game then 9600k/9700k..... Clock to 4.9/5ghz

***seems latest patches without mods, 3700x doesn;t do to badly against 9700k - about 6fps behind at 1440p

pulled the trigger on that lot, those mounts look pretty similar, i'll have to see in the flesh, worst case i'll have to order a new cooler separately, but i can imagine it shouldn't be too hard to knock something up.
