Find a 80s children book, I've forgotten the name of.

I talking to a friend about random stuff I remembered as a child, and one book in particular I remember, but can't for the life of me work out the name.
It was read to the class in first second so between year 1 - 3, around about 86 to 89..

All I can remember about it was that it entailed these little creatures that lived in huts by a river..

I know it's exists and isn't a figment of my imagination because in the past someone told me the name but I have since forgotten again what it was.

I seem to remember that it was a fairly long named book, like, Something and the something somethings..

Any guesses?

What kind of creatures are we talking about? Woodland animals or some sort of fantastical thing more like moomins? Were there pictures?

I remember them being little tiny round looking things but I was obviously very young so not a trustworthy source. They lived in little huts by a river, so kinda woodlandy. That's all I can remember.

Were the creatures little sort of pillow-like things? I remember reading one in class but can't remember the title.

Possibly I don't really remember.
So far it's none of the above.
