I have around £500 to spend.

Old one used to have a nice shiney 17" widescreen, but I guess for this budget its pushing it.

But a shiney screen would be nice.

Whats out there for this money?

There is plenty of laptops around the £500 area, but I would have to name competitors :(
I would wait till mid January as I suspect their will be a huge range of offers and deals out there, because I suspect the main suppliers will not sell as many laptops over Xmas due to the economic slowdown and general tightening of credit in the UK. I would hope you should get a decent Core2Duo, 2GB ram, 120GB HD+ machine if you are prepared to wait, maybe a decent santa Rosa chipset as well.

The Acer Aspire 7520 has a lovely shiney 17" screen.

Reasonable spec too, although it could do with 2GB ram rather than 1GB. 1.8ghz dual core AMD Athlon, 80gb HDD for £399.99.
 
Zoostorm, pretty decent laptops using oem chassis. Have been some very good reviews of them in magazines etc. Some decent specs as well, cannot go into prices as they are sold by an OCuk competitor.

Dell prices are pretty high at the moment as they expect to sell plenty of lappies to parents with nagging kids wanting laptops for chrimbo. Now in the new year when Dell have a glut of supply because people are spending less this Christmas due to credit being harder to get, there should be some nice bargains around.

Might wait till new year then.

No major rush to buy now, but popping down to a local shop is tempting as I have money waiting to be spent, lol.
