Posted this in the wrong forum initially! I *think* our internet has switched from TalkTalk to Plusnet (I ordered it). At least it's activated anyway according to Plusnet.

How can I check whether it's switched or not?

According to www.whoismyisp.org my ISP is Telefonica UK and my hostname is BeThere .

Perform a trace route to something, say BBC.co.uk, and see what the reverse DNS on the the first few hops after your router are and or cross reference this info with a lookup on Ripes database.

That would suggest you are on a O2/Be connection...

If you go to RIPE, it will show you the IP address you are accessing the site from. You can then query their database to see who holds that IP range.

Yeah, this is what I'm wondering, whether I've fallen into some kind of hole and haven't realised until now. I never did check my usage with TalkTalk (unlimited so no need) and I can't access it now as my account is closed.

I'm using an old O2 router from my old flat which may be how this has occured?

Code:
tracert www.bbc.co.uk

Tracing route to www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.246.95] over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 51 ms 97 ms 98 ms O2WirelessBox.lan [192.168.1.254]
  2 25 ms 24 ms 33 ms 87-194-114-XXX.bethere.co.uk [87.194.114.XXX]
  3 25 ms 23 ms 27 ms 10.17.88.14
  4 * 22 ms 23 ms linx-gw1.betherenow.co.uk [195.66.224.232]
  5 22 ms 23 ms 22 ms bbc-linx.pr01.thdow.bbc.co.uk [195.66.224.103]
  6 * * * Request timed out.
  7 25 ms 24 ms 29 ms ae0.er01.cwwtf.bbc.co.uk [132.185.254.93]
  8 24 ms 23 ms 24 ms 132.185.255.165
  9 24 ms 23 ms 23 ms bbc-vip016.cwwtf.bbc.co.uk [212.58.246.95]

Trace complete.

It's only become noticed now when I went to change my username and password in the router to the Plusnet details, only to see that it was still set as an @o2 username, as below:

And RIPE's search (which I've also already done):

Code:
% This is the RIPE Database query service.
% The objects are in RPSL format.
%
% The RIPE Database is subject to Terms and Conditions.
% See http://www.ripe.net/db/support/db-terms-conditions.pdf

% Note: this output has been filtered.
% To receive output for a database update, use the "-B" flag.

Chances are your old 02 account details still exist on the O2 RADIUS servers and thus let you connect.

Have you tried your Plusnet credentials in the router (for PPP)? Obviously assumes you know user O2 password in case it doesn't work...

No, haven't touched the details yet. And no, not 100% on the password - I've logged into the only O2 account I know of via their website (well, Sky's now) and it gets me in but it says I have no active services.

O2 probably stopped billing for the service but left your username/password setup, hence you being able to connect.

Expect it would vary find ISP to ISP. An automated cancel process should remove the account details from the RADIUS to avoid this situation but not to complain hey? :D
