hi all.. ok so i ve had my mac for about 8 months now and i do love it to bits, its just a far superior in ALMOST EVERY WAY to windows. Unfortunately i am still stuck a windows based world for the time being too, but having successfully managed to get my windows server talking to my mac and sharing files etc its all great, i use remote desktop to manage my server when i cant be bothered getting out of bed etc. hehe.

so i know all about moving files around in finder from one location to another using finder but still cant figure out how to activate cut copy and paste in windows style. does any one know of a patch to get this going?

control-click will do the same as a right-click with the mouse, or alternatively Apple-C and Apple-V will do the same as Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V under Windows (this is actually the case for a lot of Ctrl commands on the Mac, except if you're using an X11 app or terminal)

You can modify the finder preferences using:

defaults write com.apple.finder AllowCutForItems 1

at the terminal (you could manually edit ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist too but even a Nathan Barley-esque "creative" type could see that its easier to use the terminal in this case ;) )
tbh tho I tend to use the terminal for most file manipulation anyway e.g. "mv ~/Desktop/foo.doc ~/Documents/"

haha that brilliant!

i couldnt get cut to work

i pasted that line of code into the terminal and nout changed... did a restart for good measure too!

tried the command line malarky, it does give me cut but it tends to put stuff in the trash and nothing else, paste doesn't make it work either.

Is the justification for Cut being disabled that things can be lost if you Cut then forget about them or go on to Cut something else? Drag and drop forces you to specify a destination. Makes sense, I guess - although it should be easier to re-enable.

yeah tbh its the only thing mac needs to look to windows for inspiration, having a macbook and 2 xp machines. all networked... its just to as flexible as i am used too!
