Apologies if this sounds stupid, but I seem to be struggling in Finder post Lion upgrade. I was 'fairly' certain you could customise which icons etc you can use under preferences, this does not seem to be the case now.

For example, how do I navigate 'up' a directory?

Cheers,

G

CMD & up will take you up a directory, CMD & down will take you down into a folder or open a file.

I know what you mean though, Finder in Lion is taking a little time to get used to. I currently don't like it as much but I'm sure I'll get used to it. It's just the sidebar really. Like the way that devices has been moved to the bottom and you can't move it up. They also seem to be making a step towards not letting you see your actual hard drive each time - like in 10.6 they removed it from the desktop by default, now you can't even get to it in the finder without using a menu command or changing your preferences! It's like they're ashamed of it or something. Still, you can put it back to your liking, but it's odd. I don't understand why they want to hide it so much.

I never used the sidebar before, I use it all the time now. You don't need to move the devices section to the top, just drag whatever you want into the Favourites section. I've done exactly that, including my hard drive.

I've done it too, but I just... I want devices at the top because it's been there for as long as I can remember :(

I'm not one to fear change but there's literally no reason why they would do that, aside from just to change something. Stupid.

Maybe it's so that you can use the most easily accessible part for the items you use the most, hence putting favourites at the top. As I said, I never really used the sidebar before but it's gained functionality by having customisable favourites at the top.

Thanks for the CMD + up/down tip :)

I think its mad that their isn't an up directory icon though, even when you right click to customise the toolbar there isn't the option.

You could add things to the sidebar previously as well, I just don't understand why they would turn it upside down. Seems pointless to me. They probably have some spiel about how having it in that order is going to revolutionise my finder experience, but all I can see is that they've moved my thing!
