Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can lend any advice. I graduated from university last summer with a BSc in Geography, but I’m still attempting to find a job that can be the start of a career. I think I haven't yet due to a few reasons.

1) I simply don’t know what I want to do; I have no 5 year plan or anything like that, I studied physical geography and so of course I have a big interest in the environment, sustainability etc, but there doesn’t seem to be a whole load of jobs in that area without needing some experience. Unfortunately I have no work experience in this area, my university did warn me about this and encouraged me to seek work experience opportunities over the summer, however I was big into my football coaching at the time and therefore spent my entire summers being involved in that, which was really enjoyable and rewarding and provided money I needed for uni, but now of course I wish I looked for opportunities relating to the environment etc in order to have something on my CV.

2) My degree was a skills based degree, I don’t feel prepared or ‘trained’ for any particular job, I do have desirable transferrable skills thanks to my degree but essentially I feel a lot of what I studied on my degree is largely irrelevant in the workplace except that of a lecturer if that makes sense. For that reason I feel I only suit ‘trainee’ jobs and therefore require someone to recognise that I have the ability but will need training & developing, which I haven’t found a lot of places willing to do, a lot of job adverts state they want previous experience.

I have recently been interviewed for 2 jobs, both of which provided good training and could be the start of something and required no previous experience, however feedback was pretty much the same, I was a strong candidate, but I couldn’t prove I’d always had a passion or interest in that job/industry, which is true, I applied because I believed I had the skills to succeed and they were willing to provide training which could have been the start of something, I did display a lot of enthusiasm for both jobs for this reason but obviously both employers felt I lacked an underlying passion for that specific job or industry.

One job I was interested in was becoming a quantity surveyor, however the jobs I have found advertising for this require previous work experience or were offering to put you through a degree, haven't found any looking for a fresh graduate without prior experience.

Basically, I'm unsure of what I want to do, therefore finding it difficult to plan my next step, all I'm really doing is checking job sites most days looking for something that sounds slightly interesting with career progression and requires no experience, any ideas :p?

If anyone has any advice, suggestions or help it would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Environment agency or defra mate - go on the government websites for each and see eggs you can find

Thanks for the reply, I have and regularly check those. I've decided I'm going to start applying for jobs even if I don't quite match the job requirements, as so far I've only applied to jobs where I meet them, I feel I interview far better than how I look on paper, so hopefully I'll get some more interviews.
