Hey,

I saw this website a while ago where users post their requirements and price they want to pay then designers compete for work. Any ideas what its called? I've completely forgotten..

Or can anyone suggest where i can get into contact with some 'just out of uni' designers?

Thankyou! :)

Mmm similar but the style was slightly different. You post your requirement and then the designers would come back with screenshots of their input.

Thanks for your help though.

Youre looking to exploit new designers and undermine the industry basically :)

Would you go into a garage and ask for a cheaper bit of work as its someone without 10years experience?
You're basically allowing new designers/designers with no morals to put time and effort into a design that you probably won't pick. Have you seen the statistics on 99designs? Each design works out something silly like $3, and on average its probably a few hours work meaning they're getting next to nothing!

As usual just my 2c, if you want a nice website and logo then don't use a speculative work website as most of the time the work is of a lower standard.

Would you go to a dentist and allow them to compete for your work on your teeth? No you pay a premium as it is a premium service conducted by professionals, you wouldn't let an un-qualified person anywhere near you, so why do it to a website/logo? :)

Sure it works out hardly anything, but it's a great way to build your portfolio in your spare time.

Its not a great way, its undermining the industry like I've already said. Its not exactly good practice for you as a designer to design something you like for hours, to not get paid over and over again.

99% of people probably don't get paid and its under average quality work anyway which they keep repeating and not learning as they stuck in this cycle of "lets design something really quick so if I don't win it hasn't wasted too much time" GREAT attitude!

tsinc80697 - don't know what you mean, always found these sites a fantastic source of income! The number of client conversations that start - I originally spent £x on web design from some silly website that promised the Earth and gave nothing, now I want it done properly... :)

Now they want it done properly yet are advertising it for spec work? Great! Let people work for nothing with the possibility of payment, what other industry does this? How man top designers do this? How many even started by this?

Every designer I speak to has a passionate hatred for spec work websites as they are detrimental and allow people who think they can design to produce rubbish and then get it in their mind that they are a designer. Have you see the amount of absurdly rubbish portfolios built from these websites? With people adding 10 logos for one project to their portfolio. You should only be adding the best work to your portfolio not 10 crap designs to bulk it up.

They allow people who cant design to think they can design and then offer advice to individuals/company's when they are talking utter garbage and producing work which is taking a step backward.

tsinc80697 - you a web designer then tsinc80697? :) Most industries 'do this', it's just web design is newer. In finance there used to be masses of loan sharks, until people understood the value-add of banks. In markets there used to be dodgy street sellers, hence people moved to high street brands etc etc etc...

I just look at it like spam emails, yes initially I'm sure there are people who really believe that they can get a loan of 1,000,000 Nigerian dollars or that they will be able to extend the length of their... personality.

But in the long run people just end up wiser and will understand why they should go to a bank for a loan or a... well... just learn to accept the size of their personality... ;)

Don't worry, every shoddy bit of web design does you a great service in the long run!

I'm a designer / developer yes :) Everyone in the world hates spam, so using your example of spec work is like spam, everyone should hate spec work as it is full of crap and needs to be rid off :)

Dodgy street sellers, loan sharks, all the examples you give are "dodgy"/illegal/should be wiped out, so yes I agree with you there, spec work should be wiped out. Nice way to compare it to illegal/damaging things though, I see it in that exact way myself :)

If there was no spec work websites then people would understand that web design is not free and takes 20 minutes to do, its a million if not billion dollar industry that doesn't need these things holding it back or damaging it by allowing anyone to become a designer. Ever had a client who starts giving you design advice? Thats because they think they can design because everyone these days does, and spec work is promoting this as it allows anyone to download an illegal copy of Adobe CS4, whack it open, make some crap and hey, they're a designer, not!

Some great reads here if you feel strongly on the debate for spec work, no idea why anyone really would!

Oh and every bit of shoddy design doesn't do me a great service, as people come to me uninformed asking for an entire website for £300 or try offering me advice on how to do my job which is just ridiculous as you wouldn't offer a trained mechanic advice just because you bought a car would you? Its just ridiculous in every sense!
