Finding designers, web & logo..

Yeah, can see your perspective in the short term - but firmly believe it's no problem in the long term. People don't understand the market and the complexities, so they either listen to you or they waste their money and end up coming back, you won't lose out, they will.

ie the cost to have 'a website' is either:

a) buy a shoddy website that doesn't work for £300, then come back to tsinc80697 for a proper one £5000 - total £5300

b) go to tsinc80697 for a proper one £5000 - total £5000

If they really need a website (and by that I mean a proper one that they are willing to brand their company with), then these spec work jobs never live up to the mark, meaning they learn their lesson and are even more willing to put decent money up than they would have been before.

People always are always more willing to invest in things after they've been burnt - whether you're talking about dodgy cars, dodgy websites or cheap brand PSUs... in which case it's often quite literally burnt... ;)

Do you do freelance work or are you company-based? Would be interested to see your work (reason being we often need to outsource overflow work, so is always good to build a network of decent designers...)

Yeah I see your point about the cost not being a major issue, but its the time/stress for the client. If you paid £300 or something and expected the world, to be let down then told you need to pay 10x that amount for something good you wouldn't be happy due to mis-information.

On top of that you will most likely have gained some level of knowledge and this will probably be incorrect and lets the client think they know what they need when really they don't know what they need, they just have a problem and are looking for someone to solve it :) or they think they have this vast knowledge and try to push it into a website when they shouldn't be!

Yeah I'm a freelance designer/developer and I work at a really good agency in Manchester. My work/freelance blog is in my sig below with recent work in it and how to contact me.

I agree with tsinc completely. These websites do no favours for designers. People come to expect cheap websites and get cheap rubbish, setting a new low standard. All the while proper designers who produce excellent websites are being frowned upon as being expensive because billy bob from India doesn't mind making a website on a shoestring.
