Behind you... Naked!
This is a really sad resaon that I am posting this.

A friend of mine, has asked me abotu getting information off an ipad.

I said that its very secure etc, but I will ask around.

What has happened, is a woman, who has always been very happy and joyful, called her husband upstairs last week, and he was on the phone, so he said he will be up in a moment. When he went up, he found her hanging from her door handle.

he did what he could and got the ambulance etc, but they could not help either and so she died.

Whether it was a call for help, and she never meant it to go that far, I dont know, but the only thing that we do know, and that is, that she was using the ipad for about an hour before this happened.

Now, I have the ipad here with me, but all its doing, is telling me that it has been disabled, and I need to connect it to itunes.

Now, when this happens with an ipod or an iphone, it usually ends up wiping the device, but obviously, thats the last thing we want it to do!

Anyone have any ideas what can be done?

There might not be anything on there that will help us find out why she ended her life, but the family would absolutely love to have some kind of answers.

This is NOT soem kind of sick nonsense joke, I am asking as honestly and openly as I can.

Hi there. I'm very sorry about your friends loss. Must be incredibly horrifying to witness such a thing.

Regarding getting information off the iPad, well, sorry to tell you this but unless she knows the passcode to the iPad, or know the email address connected to the iPad's Apple ID, she has absolutely no chance of unlocking it.

I presume she doesn't know the passcode to the iPad, otherwise you wouldn't be making this post. Does she know her husbands iPad Apple ID/iTunes email address and password? If she does, she can always go to iCloud.com and try resetting it from there. But if her husband has 2 step verification on, then, again, she'll need to know the passcode to the iPad.

I have to tell you that it's pretty much best to let go of the idea of getting into the iPad. Do you remember the San Bernandino shooting in America 2 years ago? The terrorists had an iPhone that was found by the FBI. The FBI demanded Apple give the passcode for the iPhone. Apple refused for a variety of reasons. Read up on it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI–Apple_encryption_dispute

It's pretty much gonna be the same thing with the iPad. Only the owner of the iPad (and anyone he/she has given the passcode too) have access to it.

It is a bit unusual as to why she didn't know the passcode. Didn't she ever use it herself?

o531 is right that these are very secure, but things have moved on from the FBI v Apple case and the reason it was dropped was because another company found a way to get into the phone for the FBI.

The only private company in the UK that may still be able to recover information from the iPad in this state is Sytech Digital Forensics. This does depend on which iOS version the tablet is running so hopefully it wasn't updated to iOS 11 yet.

It won't be cheap, unfortunately. Expect to be paying between £1800-£3500 from what I've heard. :(

Thanks for the replies guys... I have been busy as heck and so hence the delay in getting back.

As for the security, this is EXACTLY what I said to them about getting in... Apple pride themselves on the security so much that they cannot even get in, and yes, when they were asked to make a back door, they even refused as it would destroy the trust of their customers if they did such a thing.

This is a great thing, but there are sometimes times when you would love to get in, and its for such reasons that you would love to help out.

Thank you very much though.

Did she manage to have any luck at all? Or has she given up now?

I do feel sorry for her for sure.

I am so sorry for your friends loss :(

As mentioned they are incredibly secure devices - the only thing I can think of - (I say this with the greatest of respect and the only plausible thing I can think of, 'matter of fact'), does the Ipad have touch ID ? And is her body still in the morgue ? Could the police perhaps see if the touch ID works on her fingerprint as part of an investigation to her passing ?

I don't say that lightly and I feel slightly sick to my stomach for suggesting it :( - but to save tens of thousands of £'s and to get some much needed answers it may work to access the device ? I understand its an extreme suggestion - but in theory it could work assuming not to much time has passed in which the ipad would require the code.

Other than that I have no idea I am afraid :( - perhaps there is a hack in which using the fingerprint would make it easier to access even if it then asked for the code?

Option 2: What was she using to browse the internet ? Google chrome? safari ? Would the browse history sync across to another device ? - I use chrome and my browsing history is transferred from ipad to my desktop

Unfortunately wouldn't work. iOS needs the PIN/password entered once every 24 hours if the device is left on, and it needs the PIN/password entered after a reboot before it will allow TouchID to be used to unlock the device. :(
