Finding passport number...without passport

I need to apply for a visa for a work trip, but my passport is not in my possession, can I phone the passport office for my number, or is it the kind of thing they would refuse to give out over the phone?

I doubt you can get that info easilly if at all. Best tjust to get hold of the passport, which you will need anyway.

My place of work required a photocopy of my passport on file. If yours has too maybe you could ask them if you could have a look?

They have my driving licence but not my passport

I'm just curious as to how your passport is 'not in your possession'.... Surely you could either phone whoever has it, or should have reported it as stolen by now?

As above, I doubt they'll give it to you over the phone, best look for old applications/bookings where you might have a record of it. Just searched gmail for mine and it's on my Indian visa application and all the bookings I made in China via Ctrip or eLong, though not for any of my other flights, oddly. Sure you'll find it noted down somewhere.
