Hullo folks.

I'm a well seasoned contractor with extensive experience of software development mainly focused on front end desktop and web applications.

I'm about to move abroad & I hope to pull in some remote work to tide my over until I've got my residency and work permit in place.

Anyone ever made any money out of sites like Upwork? I seem to remember dabbling in similar over 10 years ago and found myself up against basically people from all over the world prepared to work for peanuts.

While I expect to make a fraction of my current day rate, I'd like to think I could attract a better rate by sheer virtue of my career history, though I guess even that probably isn't verifiable so will hold little weight out there in the wild.

I guess my preferred option would be to secure a WFH role with a UK company with no requirement to be resident in the UK but it's a tough enough market at the moment even for roles that require an on site prescence.

Thoughts?

I think securing a role with a UK company can have taxation complications if you're working remotely in a different country. Subcontracting may be different.

I work for a big software dev company and I recall towards the end of the pandemic a number of people must have contacted HR about working remotely from a different country. I seem to recall the first hurdle was that the company must have an office in the country - possibly for tax purposes.

Hmmm.... perhaps that's why the remote roles I see advertised seem to have the requirement for being UK based.

Many are looking for remote jobs, especially on software dev side. But if you look around since the pandemic these jobs are becoming hard to find. If you do find one, they need you in the office at least twice a week.

100% remote working jobs are becoming rare again.

Issue with working abroad is tax. (my mrs is a tax advisor)

In a past role we've had contractors work from EU locations, but in the end of the day it's up to the contracting company (agency or contractor directly) that agrees they're liable for any tax.

Working roles inside IR35.. companies don't want the tax headaches.

So you'll be limited to working in roles outside of IR35 until the government finally gives up on the stupidity of IR35.

So the only workable solution is to find a client in the country in which one is located. Just as well I can speak the language, moreorless
