Does anyone know how you'd go about finding the telephone number of a property you've not yet moved into?

I'm due to move. I know the current tenant has an active telephone line, probably BT, or Virgin, but i don't know the number.

The contract states that the telephone number cannot be changed, so i'm curious as to what the number of the place actually is

Yeah the number they have is not the correct one.

You know what letting agents are like.

I just wanted to get on with arranging my line transfer and checking broadband speed etc..

You used to be able to do this with 192.com but I'm not sure if you can still do it.

If the letting agent has got the wrong number then it sounds like a tenant has already changed the phone number so it shouldn't be a problem for you to do the same.

If the agents have the wrong number... knock on the door and ask?
Or when u gt into the property dial yer mobile?

IF the phone number cannot be changed does that mean theres an existing contract under "someones" name? If so how do they expect you to get BB active? Just add it to their bill?

Ok new twist. The number works when dialled. That must mean that is on an LLU hence the BT Checker not being about to find it.

How i'd find out who it is I don't know. The only LLUs in the area are TalkTalk/Tiscali, C&W, and AOL - I've check on all their websites (well not C&W) and it comes back as them not being able to verify the number.

I can't very well turn up on the door step and start asking a bunch of questions of someone i've never met.

This is going to drastically slow down my acquisition of broadband at this property. Grrr

Could be a WLR number - when I moved in here I was in the same boat, turned out the calls, line rental and BB were paid to the Post Office.

If you already have the number, try putting through order with your chosen ISP and see what happens.

All the isps i've tried just say that they can't confirm the number, or if its a new line that it might take up to 24 hours....

Such a pain. Guess i'll have to wait - though i'm not sure how i'll find out even when i've moved in.
