Can anyone recommend any fine dining Indian restaurants in London? Going with my girlfriend in August and we've both wanted to try out somewere nice that does a sort of fine dining experience but serving Indian food.

Now i've come across one, which is Atul Kochhar's restaurant http://www.benaresrestaurant.com/ but just wondering if anyone else can recommend me somewhere in London like this? Or if anyone has been to Benares offer some feedback/reviews on it?

Not sure if 'fine dining' is correct term for it, but i'm basically looking for somewhere where that isn't just your generic meat curry, poppadoms, rice and a naan.

I've been to both Tamarind and The Quilon, both of which are Michelin starred 'fine dining' restaurants.

Both are very good quality and also cheap. The food and wine selections are excellent at them both. Quilon was very recently refurbished and I haven't been back since, but it's looking good.

Very difficult to choose a favourite as they have their own pros and cons, so just take a look and the menus and see what you like the look of best.

I can recommend Rasoi (michelin star) which is definitely not your usual Indian food, I also went to Trishna yesterday and had their 5 course taste menu from toptable which was really good.

both are in central London.

Amaya. Very much modern Indian and a sharing platter system. Massive focus on kebabs and very little on curries etc. I believe it received a Michelin star as well.

I see Tamarind, Quilon and Rasoi recommended above. Below are my opinions on them -

1) Tamarind - Was recommended to us but I was personally put off as dish I asked for was spicy as requested but lacked any flavour. Spice without flavour is pointless. Maybe I got unlucky, and to be honest, from what I have heard about it, I probably did, but that experience did put me off enough so haven't been back.

2) Quilon - Don't personally love the food because of the cuisine (focus on south indian food), but it is definitely good. Well prepared and good flavours.

3) Rasoi - Not a fan really but it is very much your 'home made' Indian food. Possibly not a fan because it's exactly the stuff I eat at home so didn't feel like going to a restaurant for it :) What others would think, I can't say.

I went to Benares a few years ago and, assuming that it hasn't changed too much, would very much recommend it. Very nice setting and ambiance, great service, and lovely food. It's not your typical Indian restaurant (a quick glance at their menu will show you that) but fantastic food cooked with the flavour of India.

Completely forgot I'd posted this thread, thanks guys for the suggestions, looks like there are some quality establishments mentioned - going to put them to the Mrs and see which one she fancies!
