Hi guys,

I require a few more pieces to complete my puzzle.

I currently have:
Cooler Master CM-690 II Advanced USB3.0 Windowed Dominator Case
LG GH24NS95 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM (didn't realise OEM came with no cables etc?)
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

I will buy a 3570k chip (don't plan to overclock (yet, if at all), so will buy the retail version with the fan).

I require some advice on choosing the remaining components please:
mobo
psu (pref. modular)
hd
SSD (if it's worth getting one just for the OS)
OS

I probably will rely on the cpu gfx as I'm only playing a bit of Sim City 4 atm and will purchase a gfx card at a later date.

Thanks.

Do you have any idea of a budget?

Plus, if you don't plan on overclocking - Why not get a locked i5, save yourself a bit of money to spend elsewhere?

In terms of an SSD for OS - Totally worth it, can breathe new life into any system :)

I think i'll stick to a 'k' chip for the sake of a few quid.

mobo
psu (pref. modular)
hd
SSD (if it's worth getting one just for the OS)
OS

Wouldn't really want to spend more than £300 on the above.
mobo (80 or so)
psu (70 or so)
hd (60 or so) 500GB will do
OS (70?)

So that's 280 - maybe stretch to 350 with an SSD included.

Fair enough with the K chip, it's nice to have the option if you ever do choose to overclock :)

If you wanted it under £300, I think there's a trial version of Windows 8 you can get(?) so you could use that just for now.

For your £350 max, I managed this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD120BW) £83.99
1 x Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £79.99
1 x Seasonic G series 550w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £72.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £41.99
Total : £370.34 (includes shipping : £9.50).

You could probably get a cheaper lot, and no doubt someone else will be able to help you there.

I went for a 120GB SSD, because if you went for a 60GB, it'd fill up rather quick but if it's just for OS, then that might not be an issue I suppose.

Based on what I've read, and what people have suggested in the past - This should do nicely though :)

*Sneaky Edit - This is probably better. It's cheaper, but you get a a free cooler which your i5 3570K will love! http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-202-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261

Thanks mrA.

Motherboards are where I need the most guidance.

The specs on the MSI one are "1 x 3.0 pci", does that mean you can't use 2 gfx cards as dual 3.0 or are all cards 1 x3.0 and the second card goes into a 2.0 slot?

Seasonic are rebranded corsair iirc?

I'll be honest, I'm not sure about the answers to either of those questions. I thought Corsair was rebranded Seasonic :p

In terms of using 2 GPUs, I'd image you'd need both slots to match but don't hold me to that. Thus meaning you'll probably want a better board anyway?

Perhaps that's a question better asked in the Graphics Cards section or perhaps someone else here can chime in.

Sorry, wish I knew the answer :(

The gigabyte lb seems to get recommend a lot.

Think I'll get that, the hd you both mentioned and a Samsung add.

Leaves OS and a psu. Is windows 8 really not worth it over 7? I use vista atm and the gf has 8 on her laptop - looks a bit naff to me - smartphone orientated.

That kit should do you just fine :)

As far as I can tell, 8 is the same as 7 with no start orb and a fancy touchscreen GUI.

I could be wrong, I haven't used it. 7 works great for me, so I'm sticking with it :p

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 128GB SSD 830 Notebook/Apple Series SATA 6Gb/s KIT with Norton Ghost - (MZ-7PC128N/EU) £89.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00403) £79.99
1 x MSI Z77A-G43 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - FREE Alpenföhn Civetta Cooler!! £69.98
1 x PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III Series 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply - White £59.99
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 1TB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA100) £54.98
Total : £354.94 (includes shipping : FREE).

This mobo is voltage locked so not ideal for overclocking, does include the heatsink so let's say ~4.2Ghz OC for the i5K. The D3H is a fine mobo but dearer than it has been in the past here. Neither mobo does SLI/Xfire and you would need to up the PSU depending on the GPUs. 500-550W is ample for any single GPU setup.

As said the 830 is better than the standard 840, better write speeds and slightly more capacity. PSU is good, wouldnt hurt to get the seasonic G series, being gold rated it will claw back some of the extra cash over the years on the electric bill

Windows 8 has built in anti-virus. Does seem to start a little quicker. You can modify it to get the start menu back. It is designed for use with touchscreens, the metro UI integrates your email and video chat, programs etc in a easy to use fashion. Maybe try the developers edition for free and then buy the OS once you have tried it out as you get free P&P :)
