So I was asking over in General Hardware and have came up with this. I was advised on a 120hz monitor but im not sure my uses would really benefit from that seeing as how I dont play any competitive online fps and I would rather have as much graphical options as I could at a solid 60hz instead of 120hz with lower options. so I have a budget of 1500-1600 max and was stuck comparing Windforce 670, Windforce 7970, Twin Frozr 680 or crossfire Windforce 7950? Assumed this would be the place since its more or less down to graphics cards at this point

Initially leaning towards dual 7950 but not sure its worth the apparent trouble of crossfire? My few PC gaming friends all recommend Nvidia but im not sure its worth the price premium over ATi since the big selling point they mention is PhysX in batman.

There is no point in going 680 or 7970 if you intend to game on a single 1080p monitor. A 7950 or 670 is perfect as both can be found factory OC and within a margin of error of their more expensive siblings.

If you are new to it avoid Crossfire. SLI is far more noob friendly. However, you shouldn't need either unless you are going to be skint in the future and can't afford to upgrade.

Well I would like to have this as future proof as possible which is where the dual 7950s came in since that does max my budget (hell it goes over it but its doable for the results) I dont mind learning about crossfire since I gather its not as easy to run smoothly but im more than willing to learn since I plan this to be a permanent move away from consoles and if crossfire 7950's means I can relax for a couple years then its maybe worth it.

I originally had the SSD at 256gb but didnt think it was needed as much as sorting out the graphics part. The cpu cooler is something I thought about. I did consider the H100i at one point

I never quite get this logic of buying excessive power so that it will be more 'future proof'. It makes much more sense to just buy a single 7950, and just buy another when that is no longer sufficient- or upgrade to an 8950 or whatever. There is no point getting unnecessary 7950 CF in the hope of being future proof because adding a second card is something that can be done at any point. Also, it means that when a single 7950 is not enough, you'll have the option of either adding a second card or getting the newer generation- as well as saving energy by having a single card when that is all that is needed for your needs.

Basically it comes down to this. With a single 7950 will I have a better gaming experience than I would on a console?

Yep, it would wipe the floor with the console. One 7950 would be more than enough for gaming at 1080p. That screen though isn't ideal. for that size of screen you'll want 1440p minimum. It is cheap and cheerful though.

Ok then I was worried I wouldnt be hitting the 60fps with just 1 7950. Well I'm still not totally set on the monitor so I'll have a look at 24" and see what I find there. Probably back to the Asus VN247H

You are allowed to turn settings down, you know?
Only a few games currently out would require the turning down of AA to maintain 60fps with a stock 7950. Getting more IQ than a consololol? Yes.

Yeah im just trying to avoid turning down too many. Part of me is just considering saying screw it getting crossfire 7950's and a 120hz monitor and just going over budget but being pretty futureproof for a while.

Update to those who offered advice. I have done the sensible(dont know if you can use sensible when describing a £1500 gaming pc purchase) thing and gone for 1 gigabyte 7950 and the samsung s23a700d since its on offer. Build log of my first gaming pc will follow once the parts arrive

Great stuff. I have that screen and it's brill. I have no problem playing games on ultra with my 7850 (clocked the living daylights out of it) so should all be good!
