The final release version of Firefox 11 isn't scheduled to make its official debut until Tuesday, but--as so often happens--it's shown up early.

Though some download links published in early reports appear to have been since taken down, there are still some third-party sites where a stable Firefox 11 can apparently be found, including Download Crew and Major Geeks.

At least one report suggests that one more update is still on the way before the browser's official release by Mozilla, however, so if you do check out an early version, you'd be wise to refresh it in a day or two.

Am on it now. Very nice to see it syncs add-ons now. Saves me from having to hunt them down on another PC...

EDIT: Well... looking at images directly is different now. Focuses it in the middle of the screen with a dark grey background. Looks pretty good...

IS it me or does FF seem slow to render / ui respond? Chrome and IE9 just seem noticeably quicker, well, more snappy I guess, even with no add-ons.

Am I missing something, seems really odd even on a fresh OS install (pc is 6GB/i7 at 4.4Ghz, SSD etc)

I do find FF slower than Chrome these days. At home I've switched to Chrome but at work Chrome is blocked so FF lives on but I might try Iron so I can get rid of FF.

I think they are fiddling with it as we speak. I remember reading that UI hardware acceleration is coming at some point I think.

Chrome is a lot smoother overall and has pretty much no lag in the UI. But for rendering and loading pages quickly Firefox/waterfox (especially image intensive pages) etc. is much quicker for me. This is on a mechanical hard drive.

Try waterfox out or the latest nightly/ux build. They are better for performance than stock firefox. The only problem is it is 64 bit so some addons might not work. The only addon that doesn't work for me is battlelog, so I just use chrome when I want to join a server on BF 3.

Alrighty then! :D

Firstly,

Make sure when you're installing these that they have there own install folders, so;

c:/program files/waterfox
c:/programs files/UX

Not all in the same folder. And when you uninstall any of them but want to continue using one of the builds and have all your bookmarks, addons etc. still there/installed, make sure you don't have the remove personal data box ticked.

Waterfox, only 64 bit option:

Nightly/UX build, you get all the latest features/new experimental stuff, so sometimes it may not be stable, a few bugs etc. but so far I have had no problems with it and I have a fair amount of add-ons installed etc.

Choice of 32 bit or 64 bit:

I am using the below, it feels faster/smoother than waterfox for me plus you get all the cool stuff sooner :D :p:

Well Athanor, how are those builds working out for you then? :)

The new curved tabs should be in the UX builds relatively soon (hopefully):

And the new download manager has been re-enabled in the UX/nightly builds, but with a small bug as you can see in the first image:p:

And a few mock-ups of the addons in the toolbar:

The UX/nightly builds now have the preferences/options in-content UI instead of separate windows, only one bug that I have encountered so far, is you can't go back to the main menu, so you have to close that tab and then open up the preferences again and click on the sub-menu you want this time, rinse and repeat :p

They are both pretty much the same really, but the UX builds gets the newest UI changes first i.e. When the australis tabs are pretty much finished, the UX builds will get an update introducing them before the nightly builds and then if it is approved by the UX users/testers then nightly builds get the update or something similar to that process anyway :p

Gave them a try and it still feels a little more sluggish to me than Chrome or, strangely, IE9. Could be my PC I suppose or just a perception thing for me. It tends to be most obvious if I have more than 6 or 7 tabs open (i'm on a i7 930 with 6Gb so shouldn't inherrantly be a memory problem) I dislike using Chrome because, frankly I don't like Googles privacy stance. IE9 is OK for most stuff as I'm not one ofr running huge amounts of add ons, but, could be better. Opera I like but it just has a few too many problems with sites to be a full time browser for me so I'm trying to get to a point with a FF build I can use full time. Still not quite there yet although I seem to remember hearing there's a an update in the works that has reworked a bunch of stuff and should feel "crisper".

Now trying FF12b2 for a bit :D

I'll keep an eye on this thread for updates from you Nex.. :)

Chrome is still smoother overall especially when you open a ton of tabs. They are working on improving that area in firefox, but IIRC things have slowed down due to other areas being more important (according to them) and some other reasons.

The project is called about:snappy.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2367863

One other thing you could try is disabling the current tab animations (closing and opening tab animations), it certainly makes opening/closing tabs feel a lot more snappy/smoother and some other people have said the same as well and for me there is virtually no slow downs at all even when opening a ton of web pages very quickly, you can do this by;

typing "about:config" in the URL bar and hitting enter

look for "browser.tabs.animate" and double click on it to set the value to false

Latest stuff;

- new built in PDF reader in the latest nightly/UX builds, apparently a bit buggy (I personally haven't bothered with it as I have no need for it :p)

Can find more info out here:

And some more mockups for the new UI:

We now have tab animations when moving tabs around in the UX/nightly builds! :D

The tabs UI, when opening loads of tabs (with animations enabled) feels smoother to me now as well.
