Pfft My firefox found an update last night and updated itself, it even told me everything was cool.

from here.

I updated mine manually. Might as well not bother with the automatic update because Firefox says it has downloaded the partial update then when I restart it, it tells me it didn't work so it has to download the full install.

Does exactly the same on my laptop, must be a bug :(

These are listed with Product set to either Core (which covers Mozilla bugs) or Firefox, and all have the fixed1.8.1.12 keyword, so presumably are bugs that are fixed in 2.0.0.12.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone with more bugzilla-fu than me finds a better list than that.

There should be an update log generated (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updates\last-update.log), so you can work out why it isn't updating from there, but AFAIK there's no bug filed for partials not working (if it downloaded a partial in the first place, but that shouldn't be an issue with the 1.8.1 branch).
It just worked for me on Windows XP too, so I'm guessing it's an issue with Vista (some of the compatibility stuff won't make it through to 2.0.0.x) or something else.

I'm guessing you missed the word beta in the title, and the advice (which I've repeated till I'm blue in the face) that if you try them, you should use a new profile?

Plugins should work without a problem (Silverlight being perhaps the only exception), and most of the most popular extensions should work fine (42% of the top 95% most-used extensions claim support with 3.0b2+, plenty more work fine with extensions.checkCompatibility turned off).

3.0b3 should ship Tuesday.

It's not a Vista issue. The partial update didn't work on my laptop at work yesterday, but worked fine on my home desktop, both on XP SP2 (well, one MCE 2005). The only obvious difference was Fx had been up all morning on my laptop while it hadn't been open more than a couple of minutes on my desktop. Not that I care though. It's hardly taking much out of my day to download the full update, and if it works, it works. :)

Have to say that I've noticed this on and off since Fx 2 was released though on a multiple of PCs, both Vista and XP - certainly it's nothing new.

Haven't access to the log on my laptop as it's at work, and I've no remote access as my PC there blew up last week. If I remember I'll check on Monday.

You'd need to add it, or try Nightly Tester Tools/MrTech's Local Install. Usual warnings apply, may eat children, maim cats etc.

Some extensions will probably need extensions.checkUpdateSecurity turned off too but there's a good security reason for leaving it on, even if it does mean disabling extensions.
