Firefox 3.0b3 Out

Before anyone moans that it screwed something up - make a new profile.

Anyone who's tried a previous beta (or alpha) and gone back to 2.0.0.x with the same profile and now tries b3 will have issues too - you need to delete the places.sqlite from the profile. See the first paragraph ;)

This list of bugs fixed since the 1.8.1 branch is kinda cool too.

I have been using the portable version at work today.
It is really nice but the bookmarks organiser and sidebar are a pain, there seems to be a lot of bugs/not working when trying to reorder and move them around (noted bug in the known issues but still very annoying).

(not least there's loads of UI work to do)

Certainly is, the new back/forward combo made me cry like a little girl. Turning text on for the toolbar seems to separate them though.

Is there a theme for XP like there is for OS X? (Proto)

You mean can Proto be installed on XP or will there be a separate theme brought in a la Proto?

If you mean the latter, no. The former, probably not.

The keyhole should get a tweaked set of icons (here for more), and there should be an option to split the buttons (IIRC flinging a separator between them should keep them apart), but barring some CSS tweakery (enabling the Vista icons on Vista, for starters) there's not going to be too much changed. The Places Organizer has a long way to go though.

There's been a replacement memory allocator checked in (jemalloc) that isn't in b3, and should improve memory fragmentation.

.

Aye, the latter.

Shame as the new icons are horrid imo. :p

I shall peek in the link though, ta. :)

Someone will no doubt come out with a WinStripe2 theme, the same as Qute (the theme pre-Fx1.0).
I'm not that bothered about the icons (getting the XP icons in Vista isn't ideal, but that's going to be dealt with), and there's another line of updates to them to come.

At the end of the day, there was a queue of people saying the visual refresh in Fx2 was rotten, it was going to be the end of Firefox, yadda yadda yadda...

The new Firefox is great. Is it just me or is this a speed demon compared to Fx 2?

Not encountered the bugs that are supposed to be in it yet, going to instal some themes and extensions and see what happens. ;)

My internet suddenly got a burst of speed, it's back to normal now. :(
The green forward and back buttons are annoying me, though. does anyone know a way to get them back to old?

Good god, I've just seen a screenshot of the new buttons. What pleb came out with those then? :(

Beta4 has a new UI so Aero effects should be in there :)

Aero effects?

A set of blue icons for Vista (that are already there, but not switched in) and possibly more theme work for the Places Organizer, but that's about it.

I read that the window transparency effects similar to what IE7 has will be what is implemented in B4 - which is good because FF needs a bit of seethruness...

Fx3 won't be using WPF.

Not likely. Read it anywhere remotely reliable?

Still got the rubbish bookmark manager where you can't drag'n'drop anything...

Also now when you order bookmarks by Name it doesn't do it the old way of directories/folders first, then single bookmarks, it mixes them all together.

To get back the old style forward/backward just use small icons.

Am impressed at times by the speed of browsing, does seem better.

Now all I need is for extensions to get ported to FF3.

Known issue, in release notes, bug been filed for months and a patch on it's way. The original person it was assigned to was (AFAIK) a volunteer, and disappeared for a few months.
If you want it fixed quicker, feel free to contribute...

Also a known issue - Fx2 does it as well.

Edit: #405198 [Firefox:Places]-Cannot drag and drop folders / items in Places Organizer [All] RESOLVED FIXED
