Just wondering what everybody thought of it so far? I've been using Firefox 3 since beta 1 and I think its come a long way since then. In terms of stability and memory it has gotten a lot better. The leaks aren't as huge as they were in Firefox 2.

What I like about Beta 4 so far:

  1. Looks prettier, fits to the systems (Mac OSX, Vista, Linux icons)
  2. Memory Usage is getting lower

I have been using the Minefield versions of Firefox 3 which have all been pretty good but I installed the Beta 4 today and I think it is rather good. I like the chance to to check what site one is connected to, [right click on the little picture to the left of the url in the url bar] as well as the smart bookmarks.

I agree on the speed and memory use, both of which are greatly improved. With just one beta to go before the RCs come rolling out, I think I'll be sticking with this until beta 5.

i want to switch to Firefox 3 but its all the extensions that i want to work as well, most of what i have don't yet work not even my theme.

A lot of the more popular extensions are already compatible, and some will work fine with a version bump. Themes are going to need a pretty big overhaul, so odds are they won't be ready till Fx3 is released.

I think this says a lot:

Yeah, the devs are really going to town on JS performance - in one of the standard benchmarks that were tried (in this thread), it's faster than Safari 3 (even the Webkit nightlies), Opera 9.5 and IE (by a huge margin).

I have been using the Minefield versions of Firefox 3

If you're running a build that calls itself Minefield and you've been keeping it up to date, you're in front of beta 4.

Hello Tolien

I have just downloaded the portable version of beta 4 to try as i have never used it before, can i install my extensions as normal on the portable version so i can try and get it to how i have Fx2 now ?

Tony

Should do - the portable version isn't official, so your mileage may vary.

You can have the proper versions of both installed (as long as you install them to different places) - you're just well-advised to keep them using separate profiles. There's a guide here.

if i install on a removerable hard drive do i still need to make a new profile ? or is it only if i install on the same hard drive that i need to do this ?

Portable should keep the profile on the removable disk you use.
If you use the official version, you'd need to create a new profile - it's not where you install it to that counts.

nope, just tried it, if anything seemed slower than my 2.0 and without half of my extensions. Back to 2.0 and now lost all my cookies, great :(

Tried it last night, and the new gecko engine is fantastically fast. For those who simply installed this alongside their existing install - make a new profile first before you judge it or it's a bit pointless.

Impressed with the new beta over version 2 with the speed of general browsing. The only thing that annoyed me is them moving the Home button to the bookmarks toolbar and I hate having too many toolbars on my browser, even if I have a 22" TFT now. :o

Customise and drag the home button back to its original place, then get rid of the toolbar. It took me a while to reailse you could just move it.
