Firefox hassles

A couple of things which should be eminently solvable but struggling with all the same:

1: Cannot change theme from default. Just upgraded to version 1.5 and firefox seems reluctant to let my choice of skin/theme stick.

>Tools>Themes
>select desired theme from popup
(in this case Modern Pinball 1.5.1)
>click use theme (green tick button greys out)
>follow suggested instruction to shut down firefox so that new theme can take effect

then on relaunch it's back to the default. most puzzling. I know not all themes work with v1.5 but my selection does or should (it isnt greyed out as obsolete/incompatible)

2: Unable to permanently clear history and address bar autocomplete.

This is a longstanding problem, I have completely uninstalled Firefox in the past and then reinstalled to no avail. Quite at a loss. tried CCleaner and other 3rd party utilities. I can go to tools>clear private data and history & address bar list is cleared for the current session only. restarting Firefox will miraculously present all the data just cleared. Very very frustrating :(

Any help on these two issues much appreciated

perhaps check that the permissions are set correctly to the firefox settings?

c:\document and settings\your username\local settings\application data\mozilla
c:\document and settings\your username\application data\mozilla

seems weird otherwise

Try this:
1. When you have the Themes window up, click Refresh Themes then use Install Now for all refreshed themes. After choosing a theme you have to restart Firefox. Don't forget to close the Themes window, as this counts as Firefox being open. If you've been downloading and have a download list, the same applies. If you are using the preloader you must cancel/close it then reload it; it allso counts as Firefox 'open'. Modern Pinball was OK with 1.5.

2. Tools, Options, Privacy, History > Clear Browsing History Now worked for me - and my addess bar history cleared too. Make sure Tools, Options, Security, Settings > Browsing History is checked.

Success! :)

Tried what you suggested Vince, but had no joy. Uninstalled the application for the nth time - also removed all residue traces in the My Programs folder. Reinstalled and was stunned to find things pretty much unchanged. Bookmarks, history etc intact.

It then occurred to me to delete the associated folders in profiles (as I assumed this had to be where Firefox was storing my user info) as highlighted by [Ric]:

c:\document and settings\your username\local settings\application data\mozilla
c:\document and settings\your username\application data\mozilla

In the course of backing up these files before deleting - a precautionary measure in case everything went awry - I happened upon a Firefox Safe mode .exe

This hitherto unnoticed option I'm happy to say, gives the user the opportunity reset everything to default but retain your bookmarksshould you so wish. And it worked a charm.

Advice to anyone having troubles use Firefox Safe Mode and cleanse your profile!

Oh how i feel refreshed :D :D :D
