When I download a *.exe file, the only option I can use is "save to disk", not "open". Is there a way to force Firefox to allow me to open *.exe files instead of saving them to disk?

Not sure if Firefox on its own can be forced to do that. It might pay to Google Firefox tweaks etc. There should be something in the about:config to allow you to tweak the options on the download window so it can enable the Open feature or have it set that way as a preset thus allowing the download to be started automatically and then the file opened without you having to intervene.

For me the Open option is greyed out for 2 seconds, then is availible for clickage. I thought it was so people don't just click open and download and open a virus.

In the options you can tell firefox to ask you where you want to save the file everytime which I prefer.
