There's an addon that'll do that:

but it doesn't look like it works with newer versions.

What about a 'New Tab' button, is there one in Firefox?
I don't want to have to Ctrl+T everytime I want a new tab.

Right click on an empty bit of the top toolbar and click customise. You can see all the buttons in FF, and drag the 'New Tab' one wherever you want it onto the toolbar.

Yes there is a 'new tab' button, if it's not there by default (don't think it is) just right click the toobar > Customise........ then add it.

tab mix plus (Search it) allows you to have a new tab button to the left of your tabs just as in your picture, as well as offering many other changes to firefox.

while you are getting add ons you should also look at getting the overclockers forum menu (very helpful imo), paste to tab and go, urlbarext, and customise google.

Decided to go back to Opera.
Pages took longer to load on Firefox than Opera, even if it's only 1-2seconds; it's very noticeable and annoying.

if it took 1-2 seconds longer then this will surely be down to something else and not firefox, perhaps a bad plugin i don't know but 1-2 seconds longer is 1-2 for full load, what i mean by that is for me it takes less then a second to load most pages unless they are massively image heavy but even then it's not very long for the content i am viewing to appear so to say 1-2 seconds longer surely must be the time it takes? if not how long then would yuo say opera takes to load a page and then do the same for firefox.

OcUK pages loads instantly in Opera.
In Firefox there is a small delay before the page loads.

When you've used Opera for a long time, you will be able to notice the difference.

perhaps you accidentally disabled the cache? it isn't 1-2 seconds longer is it? you mean 1-2 split seconds longer don't you?

I found the exact opposite to be the case, particularly with pages that have a number of images.

you are probably talking about the 'redraw' delay. In opera you can have this set from 0 to when the page loads. It's configurable in FF as well. Basically how long should the browser wait to draw the web page, bearing in mind, it may not have all the data retreived yet. If it draws it too soon, and as more elements are downloaded, it may have to 'reflow the page' which ADDS time. So what you can do it, specify a small delay to let it get the 'jist' of the page, and THEN start the drawing.
