Firefox problem

I've been running Firefox as my preferred browser now for at over six years, and until recently have had no problems.

I typically run with around 15-20 tabs, most of which remain from day to day.

However, recently, about a month ago, I noticed a delay being introduced. When I click a link, no matter what it is, there is an appreciable dely before I get the ability to do anything else with the browser. That delay seems to be increasing in time, and has now reached 5 seconds.

I get no similar problems with either IE8 or Opera.

I've tried uninstalling Firefox, downloading the latest, and reinstalling, but no improvement. I've tried with just one tab, and again no improvement - still this five second delay before I can do anything.

Has anyone else experienced this? And can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks for the replies.
Got a new profile now, and working well.
Is it possible to switch back to the other one if necessary, to recover some important information? Maybe even have two instances running simultaneously while I pick up links. And if so, how do I specify which profile I want to use? The text in profile manager seems so suggest that if I've got multiple profiles I get a prompt on firefox startup to ask which profile I'm going to want. But I've had no such prompt.

Again thanks for the reponses. I'm pleased that I'm not going to have to abandon Firefox.
