If I open a link in a tab, go to that tab and read whatever is there, then close the tab, is there any way to get Firefox to send me back to the tab I came from?

It does it for me by default in 3.5, provided the tab you closed was opened normally (i.e. ctrl-click won't do it).

It's never done it for me.

Eg. If I click the link in my sig, it opens it in a new tab at the end of the bar.
Then when I close the tab, it doesn't come back to OcUK, which is my first tab.
Instead, it goes to the last tab in the bar.

In which case I'd suggest you've got some extension (or altered preference) changing that behaviour. It does exactly that in 3.5.1 with a new profile

It's mostly because of the pref in the page you linked to - browser.tabs.selectOwnerOnClose is now True by default.
