Since Monday I have been unable to load up any secure site (e.g. that starts with "https://....") in Firefox.
It says it's loading, but sits there for a few seconds and then comes up with a "Problem loading page" screen.
The same sites open fine in IE.

These sites worked fine in FF until this week. I haven't changed any FF settings, I have cleared all cache, done a complete reinstall of FF - all to no avail.

I have no addons, and all plugins are disabled.

I am running Windows 7 Professional.

That seems to imply that port 443 (used by SSL) is being blocked. Are you sure you haven't changed your Firewall settings? May be a good idea to disable it temporarily to see if it helps.

Tools > Options > Advanced > Encryption - are both encryption protocol checkboxes checked at the top?

This is within my work environment. Firewall / proxy settings have not changed.
Both the SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 boxes are checked.

I was discounting firewall / proxy issues as this is only affecting Firefox, IE is loading up https sites fine.

What does it do when it does not load ?

404 or blank page or redirect ?

You could create a new firefox profile by renaming the profile in appdata to profile.bkp and then start firefox with fresh profile, that may clear any settings to default. Reinstalling might not create fresh settings.

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I have created a new profile in Firefox as described, makes no difference to the issue.

Do IE's proxy settings different from Firefox's?

They are exactly the same. We're also piloting a new webfiltering solution, so i have two different proxies to choose from.. Running via either in Firefox does not work. As mentioned before; via IE all https sites are fine.

Did you tick the box to use proxy for all protocols ?

Argh!!! What a schoolboy error!!!
I hang my head in shame... The tickbox wasn't ticked

All sorted. What a muppet for not spotting that!
Thanks everyone for your help.
Thanks Groen for finding the issue - cookie for you :D
