i don't understand firefox's work offline mode. say i'm sat here on my desk using firefox to do some work using xampp, though at the same time i'm connected wirelessly to my network. i lose the wireless connection but no problem i'm working locally, but instead firefox goes into work offline mode and i can't do work locally until that box is unticked. i would have thought that when it's ticked that means i can work whilst offline, but that's the opposite to how it is. can anyone explain how this works?

Work offline is just the way you can use locally stored web pages. If the pages have hyperlinks that lead to an internet site, or you're using an application that feeds from the internet, it will not work.

Say, for example, you're working on your own website that you have saved locally. You can completely test the site without going online until you click an element that requires your hosting in some way. But enabling "work offline", you are ensuring none of your requests are being sent to the internet.

actually, i'm pretty sure work offline means it only loads cached pages, so even if the website is located on your own HDD if it isn't cached then FF won't load it.

No you can specify any local file and it will load fine in work offline mode as long as it doesn't require any element's addressed through a network name. Work offline will load anything that doesn't use the network, that is why xampp won't work as it does use the network.
