I need to get my chimney stack either removed or rebuilt, and possibly the gable where the chimney stack is also.

Removing the chimney will reduce maintairence and weight, so thinking about taking off entirely.

I read you can use specific gas fires that don't require chimney, or if one is needed just exhaust through the wall, or a lightweight external shorter chimney.

It's 1890 house.

You can get gas fires with a catalytic converter on them so you don't need a flue. I'd try and keep the chimney if possible as a flued gas fire is generally a better option.

Depending on how much you use it an electric one is another option as well. Gas fires seem to be a bit old hat now as they don't normally get used as much as people think.
