i'm guessing AVG for anti virus but dunno about a firewall

Comodo Firewall & anti-virues try that, they seem the be the popular free ones at the moment.

Win32 ClamAV might be an idea for AV.
Zonealarm, or Kerio Personal Firewall (probably an older version (say 2.4 i think))

I've used Avast and Sygate personal firewall for now
Comodo doesn't work in win98
