Firewall blocking msn - how to stop?

Did a search - but interestingly, there weren't any topics with a problem similar to this.

A friend of my sister has a problem with her firewall - I don't have the full details but, apparently, she's never used msn on her computer because the firewall's blocking it.

I asked what firewall she used, and she said she didn't know. If I can't solve the problem on the spot (I'm not good with firewall programs), I'll probably come back with the name of the firewall for more detailed help...

But in the meantime, can I have some common solutions to this problem...?

Thanks in advance! (sister's friend is hot :D)

I only recently managed to get connected to broadband. Before this my MSN Messenger connected fine via dial-up. After I got broadband it would not connect even though the troubleshooting found no problems. When I disabled the firewall it worked fine. This was weird as I had not blocked it in the firewall. It was Sygate free firewall I was using. Up to this I never had a problem with Sygate.
Uninstalled Sygate and installed Sunbelt Kerio Firewall and MSN is working fine now. Strange.
Hope this might be of some help.

first off make sure msn is allowed through the firewall, if it is and its still not working then uninstall and then reinstall the firewall and this usually does the trick.

hope this helps
