Hi all,

Hopefully this is the right section and ok to post, I was just hoping if someone would be able to point me in the direction of a good book about firewalls for beginners as its a skill/knowledge I would like to know.

what I know at the minute is basic at best and would like something that would be able to explain basic configurations for certain scenarios and how/why/what it does so I can fully understand what is going on.

Ive had a look at amazon/borders but don't want to commit to a book to find it's kinda crappy.

Cheers!

EDIT:// not sure if it makes much difference but was thinking more of hardware firewalls over software, but please correct me if wrong. It's the only way i'll learn :D What I know at the minute are really the basics of VPN and mobile VPN and setting the clients up for them.

Sorry, but I can't point you too any books but I can give a hardware firewall.

Its called Smooth Wall(http://www.smoothwall.org/). It can run on a relatively low specification computer. The computer you use will have to have two network ports as you need to have all the computers 'sat behind' it for them to gain protection, so the computer would be connected to your router and then the second network port on the pc would feed out to a switch or hub(not recommended for speed reasons).

Hope this helps...and makes sense.

Cool I will have a look properly tomorrow. I'm just trying to find something that provides me a with pretty good understanding of firewalls and how they work etc. I know the best thing will be to just play around with them, which is something i'm trying to sort out at work but something to read when i'm at home would be cool too!

Cheers!

Come to think of it try the 'For Dummies' Series. They usually have books on anything for computing, picked one up for networking when I started about two years ago.

No problem. They really are good books, I also like another series 'In Easy Steps'. They usually have a wide range on computers and do think that they do have one on firewalls after looking at Amazon.

Building Internet Firewalls is a good bet. It assumes a good knowledge of TCP/IP though so you may want to read up on TCP/IP fundamentals first ...

Two of the classic books when starting researching computer security are;

TCP/IP Network Administration, and Computer Security Basics, both by o'riley.

I'd also suggest reading Bruce Schneier - Secrets & Lies, Digital Security in a Networked World. A great overview of why security works and fails in the real world.

After those your really looking at vendor specific books on firewalls like Cisco Pix/ASA and Checkpoint Firewall1. These usually build experience by walking through various scenarios.

Cheers for the extra suggestions guys, I will try and get myself to a good bookshop/libary so I can have a good nose around them before i decide what I go for.

Cheers again for the help its really appreciated! :)
