Hi Folks,

My brother is moving into his uni house soon with 6 others and they will be getting broadband when they get there. I read on here a while ago about installing linux onto a computer and using it to split the connection equally between each of the computers. I have searched for the thread but cant find it so can some please let me know what software and hardware would be required to do this?

I have an old comp to use that can have the linux installed onto it, the broadband will be coming in through a modem so I was thinking the set up would be as follows

>wall socket>modem>linux box> PCs

Also, would it be possible for the connection to be split over the network using just one wireless network card in the splitter?

Thanks for any help

Matt

You're looking for a router. Something like Smoothwall, IPCop, Clark Connect would be what you're after.

No idea on wireless support with any of them though - you might be much better off hooking a wireless AP to a network card, at least then you'd be guaranteed no problems with drivers.
