Hello,

I just made the move 2 vista this weekend on my Desktop. I was wondering if any1 can recommend me a good free firewall. I hear zone alarm is rubbish on vista

Thanks

Russell

Tbh i haven't got much faith in the windows firewall, the XP firewall was a pos and why risk just using the Vista one when others are free?

Im not going to lie, im not an expert on firewalls. I just know that i had a few malware issues when running just the OS firewall. Nothing major but these issues stopped when i added a firewall recommended by a friend (Zone Alarm). Im just saying that why take the risk when the software is free? And tbh does anyone really trust microsoft anymore!

Okay i will concede to your greater knowledge regarding windows firewalls! But surely no harm can be done by downloading a free firewall just in case?

In the interest of full disclosure i don't trust OSX of Linux either, i have trust issues! Also how long does n00b status last?

I don't see the point personally, the Windows one is fine or all but the most nervous, but it's a bit of an arbitrary decision.

Comodo firewall works on Vista and its free and good. Only it can pop up loads of alerts if you run the defence+ component, so I'd switch it off.

Oh dear.

This might come in useful too, just to be extra safe:

If outbound filtering is important to you I'd use a 3rd party firewall - vista firewall outbound filtering is flaky and half baked to say the least (well, it was - it may have improved with updates - mines been switched off since day one!)

Why shouldn't we?

As long as you have UAC enabled, plus defender and the Windows Firewall, you'll need to be quite the n00b to get any malware.

I love your responces Burnsy. :D

But he is right UAC enabled, defender enabled with the windows firewall and a little common sense while browsing you should be fine.
