Firewall issues

Looks like a I got a virus the other day and it has affected my firewall. I'm not sure the name of the virus, but I booted into safe mode and run MSE, malware antibytes and spy bot. They've all come back clean now. However, I still can't turn on the windows firewall. (Win 7 btw) When I try I get the error:

Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local computer. For more information, reviews the system event log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 5.

I've spent the best part of half a day reading troubleshooting guides and changing/downloading registry keys but still no luck. I've got 3 choices:
1 - Run without a firewall
2 - Use a 3rd party firewall
3 - Fresh install of windows

Seeing as I don't use the computer that much, I don't really want to do 3. How risky is it to go with option 1? Any recommendations for option 2?

Thanks for any help.
