Firewall question

Hi all,

My dad is having problems with viri on his computer. The viruses im sure are coming from emails.

Would getting a hardware firewall, like a netgear firewall/router/wifi stop these viruses attacking?

His computer does have antivirus protection, which is up to date. Its norton anti-virus. I know some ppl on here dont like it but thats what he's got.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Unless it scans the emails (and the consumer Netgear doesn't), no.

The best thing here would be to clean the computer out and then spend a good deal of time educating him as to why he shouldn't open email attachments from "red hot babes xxx.com".

Eitehr that or just chuck a virus on that completely kills his install. When that happened to my dad, he was suddenly VERY willing to learn and to this day he's a lot better with email attachments, "free software" from websites and anything you care to name.

AVG free will scan emails via microsoft outlook and probably outlook express.
